New CommVault Integrations with Amazon Web Services Glacierby Paul McClure

Every day organizations big and small are looking for ways to move applications and workloads into the cloud. The fluidity of data in and out of the cloud promises incredible benefits like offloading already strained IT staff, lowering infrastructure requirements and matching service levels with storage costs. As organizations navigate these IT decisions, it’s our mission to provide options.

This is one of the many reasons CommVault has worked hard to integrate our Simpana 10 software with cloud platforms. Customers can use Simpana software to seamlessly move data from their CommVault-protected on-premises data center to infrastructure as a service from leading cloud providers such as Amazon Web Service (AWS).

Today we’re announcing new integration with Amazon Glacier, which is an extremely low-cost cloud storage service for data archiving. At 1 cent per GB, Amazon Glacier introduces a compelling, online alternative to offline, vaulted storage.

AWS delivers scalable, pay-as-you-go cloud services for hundreds of thousands of customers around the world and has an extensive partner network. CommVault began supporting AWS starting with Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) and Simpana 8 back in 2010. With the new AWS integrations, CommVault Simpana 10 now makes it possible for customers and service provider partners to efficiently leverage AWS cloud services in a simple, cost-effective way to provide cloud-based services that meet their SLAs and budgetary requirements.

(If you’re wondering about the differences between S3 and Glacier, Amazon recommends using Amazon S3 if you need low latency or frequent access to your data. Go with Amazon Glacier if low storage cost is important, your data is rarely retrieved, and retrieval times of several hours are acceptable.)

Modern Data Protection and Archiving for Amazon Glacier and Amazon S3 Cloud Services

For cost-effective, long-term storage of backup and archive data, Simpana software works hand-in-hand with both Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier to securely move infrequently accessed data into highly available, highly durable low-cost cloud storage. CommVault’s support for Amazon Glacier cloud storage was released with Simpana 10 Service Pack 3A.

Here’s how Simpana 10 works with both AWS cloud services:

  • For enterprises and managed service providers that leverage AWS cloud infrastructure, Simpana software can seamlessly move and manage their client data across a range of environments, spanning customer on-premise, provider-managed, and IaaS-hosted storage, including Amazon S3 and Glacier cloud storage options.
  • Simpana software also delivers integrated alerting, reporting, tracking and data verification of data copies in the AWS cloud.
  • Simpana software can compress and deduplicate data at the source, which optimizes capacity growth, bandwidth consumption and cloud costs over time.
  • Optional data encryption is integrated into Simpana software to secure backup and archive data before it is sent to AWS. Simpana software supports a range of FIPS certified encryption algorithms, including Blowfish, AES and 3-DES, to allow users to configure the right encryption level to meet security requirements. The combination of CommVault solutions and AWS cloud services provides a secure environment with authentication processes that ensure your data is safe from unauthorized access.
  • CommVault’s built-in tiering capabilities also allow customers and service providers to automate data movement into AWS based on user-defined policies. That means less time spent provisioning capacity and refreshing hardware and more time focusing on strategic projects that bring value to the business.
  • See our online documentation for more information.

CommVault has the AWS cloud covered whether you’re a service provider looking to use AWS as part of a managed service offering or an end user looking to reduce your hardware spend.
