CommVault Solutions — Continuous Data Protection (CDP)

When daily backups just aren't enough, let CommVault® Continuous Data Protection (CDP) solutions complement your existing data protection strategy.

In the event of a temporary outage or disaster, it is critical to quickly recover the most recent data versus old files or archived files. Traditional backup methods are only as good as your last backup and do not protect data created between backups. Continuous data protection solutions help reduce or eliminate data loss.

What is Continuous Data Protection (CDP)?
There are many definitions for CDP. According to the Storage Networking Association (SNIA):

Continuous Data Protection (CDP) is a service that captures changes to data to a separate storage location. There are multiple methods for capturing the continuous changes involving different technologies that serve different needs. CDP-based solutions can provide fine granularities of restorable objects ranging from crash-consistent images to logical objects such as files, mail boxes, messages, and database files and logs.

In short, CDP is the process of continuously capturing updates to data in real time or near real time and copying those updates to a secondary storage location. This process provides more points in time to recover from than traditional backup methods. There are multiple technologies such as snapshots and replication that can be used individually or combined with traditional backup to deliver varying degrees of continuous data protection.

The key benefits delivered by CDP include:

  • Shrinking the backup window
  • Delivering faster recovery
  • Reducing potential data loss

CommVault® CDP
CommVault Continuous Data Protection solutions complement your existing data protection strategy, simplify management, increase backup reliability, and help meet service level agreements.

CommVault delivers the following solutions for continuous data protection:

Continuous Data Replicator (CDR) — is a host-based, replication technology that delivers near-continuous data protection (Near-CDP). It enables the use of live data or near real time replicas to expedite recovery. By continuously capturing and replicating changes when a file is saved or closed, CDR enables snapshots to be taken at administrator defined intervals. These snapshots can be used to create consistent recovery points. In the event of data or application corruption, administrators can roll back to a previous recovery point, enabling recovery to a specific point in time.

Quick Recovery (QR) — makes it fast and easy to manage snapshot copies of file system data, Exchange Information Stores, SQL Server and Oracle databases. It automates the creation of multiple point-in-time snapshot copies, for rapid remount when data corruption occurs QR enables you to leverage a wide range of array-embedded snapshot technologies including those from HDS, NetApp, EMC, HP, Engenio, IBM, LeftHand, Xiotech and many more. This provides comprehensive snapshot management without being locked in to a single hardware vendor.
