Industry analysts estimate that 60 to 80% of corporate data resides outside the data center in remote offices. Remote office data requires the same type of protection and availability as data residing within the data center and is subject to the same government regulations. Yet, it is often insufficiently protected due to lack of resources and high costs.
There are many methods for protecting remote office data depending on the platforms, applications and service levels that you need to meet. CommVault® delivers the following solutions to help you protect remote office data.
For UNIX, Linux, NetWare and Windows Systems - Backup and Recovery, either used locally or with built-in synthetic full capabilities to centralize remote
data all managed remotely by experienced data center administrators
For Windows Systems - Replication, to move data from remote offices into centralized locations where it can be managed more easily and cost-effectively
- HSM Archiving, to combine with replication to reduce the disk space required to store data in remote and data center sites
Backup & Recovery for Remote Offices
Local Backups CommVault Galaxy® Backup and Recovery provides local disk to tape backup of your remote office data and applications. Once on tape, the data can be transported to an offsite storage location or to a central site for easy management. While providing effective data protection, this method limits the recovery point to the last good backup, leaving data created or changed between backups unprotected. For a real-time copy of data, consider using backup in conjunction with CommVault Continuous Data Replicator.
WAN-based Backups CommVault Galaxy® Backup and Recovery provides disk-to-disk backup over a WAN. This enables you to centrally protect and manage your data using traditional backup cycles such as weekly full, incremental or differential backups. If network bandwidth is an issue, you can perform an initial full backup and leverage incremental changes to create a synthetic full backup. This provides all the benefits of traditional full backups but consumes less network bandwidth and reduces backup time.
Replication for Remote Offices
CommVault Continuous Data Replicator (CDR) provides cost effective, real-time replication that enables you to centralize remote office data, simplifying management and protection. Additionally, CDR enables better utilization of your network by capturing and replicating changes as they occur versus pushing all the data over the network at one time, during a backup.
With CDR, you can deploy a many-to-one configuration to replicate data from multiple remote offices to a central location in near real time. This enables you to leverage a central infrastructure of backup software and devices and manage it with a single trained team of backup and recovery specialists.
CDR enables snapshots to be taken at administrator defined intervals. These snapshots can be used to create consistent recovery points. In the event of data or application corruption, administrators can roll back to a previous recovery point, enabling recovery to a specific point in time.
Centralizing data for management also provides these benefits: - Provides a central collection point for tape rotation
- Increases reliability of backup and recovery operations
- Increases operational efficiency and reduces costs
- Delivers continuous data protection for point in time recovery
Continuous Data Replicator can be used as a standalone solution to consolidate remote office data or it can be easily added to your existing CommVault environment to extend CommVault Galaxy Backup and Recovery to remote offices. CDR offers a simple, unified interface that lets you easily create, track, administer and manage the replication, backup and snapshot creation process. CommVault unified architecture offers the ability to manage and track replicas of remote backup sets and snapshots back to the source from a single policy based console. Integration with CommVault Galaxy software provides granularity to browse backup recovery points and perform data backup and one step object-level restore of individual files, e-mail messages, folders and mailboxes all from the same easy to manage graphical user interface console.
Key benefits of CDR integration with CommVault Galaxy Backup & Recovery include:
- Schedule operations through a single UI
- Automatically schedule backup of file system and application recovery points
- Browse backup set from the perspective of the original client to simplify restore and configuration in complex environments
- Leverage near real time data protection to reduce interval of vulnerability helping meet RPO
HSM Archiving
By using CommVault® Archive in conjunction with Continuous Data Replicator, you can extend your data center retention and lifecycle management to remote office data. This significantly reduces the amount of replicated data retained on primary storage.
This also: - Saves storage costs by optimizing storage capacity
- Reduces backup time and storage space
- Improves speed of file system recovery
- Extends the life of primary storage devices
CommVault remote office data management solutions can be used individually or combined to meet your specific remote data protection needs.
