Predictions for 2014 – Guaranteed to Come True!
It’s that prediction time of year, and even though we're a bit late to the game, the difference between us and all the other prognosticators is that our predictions are 100 percent guaranteed to come true! Read on.
Prediction No. 1: An organization will lose data and not be able to get it back
Our crystal ball informs us that there will be a significant data loss event at an organization that will result in the tearing of hair and the rending of garments. After losing a major data set, the IT team will realize that the previous night’s backup failed (again) and they have to restore a data set now 39 hours old and getting moldier by the minute. This will cause consternation and second guessing along the lines of, “Why didn’t we fix our backup problem? We knew this would happen eventually.”
Prediction No. 2: Someone will want to throw their legacy backup software off the roof
After the 134th long day spent troubleshooting failed backups, a backup administrator will wish dearly that he could throw his legacy backup software out the window, even though there are no windows in his data center. He imagines taking a backup server up to the roof and tossing it the way David Letterman throws stuff off buildings. Sadly, he will be informed that throwing the server off the roof violates company safety rules.
Prediction No. 3: The guy from the previous prediction will switch to Commvault Simpana 10
Frustrated by an inability to destroy his backup server, the guy from the previous prediction will finally realize that backup doesn’t have to be an ongoing nightmare, that it can be efficient and successful, and that it can do a lot more than just back up. He will realize that by switching to Commvault Simpana 10, he can solve his backup problems, add lots of additional value, such as archiving and remote data access, and do it all cost effectively. The budget he saves will allow him to decommission an old server and throw it off a roof, finally getting it out of his system.
Prediction No. 4: Somebody somewhere will be really, really annoyed that they didn’t back up their laptop
A high-powered corporate executive will have a laptop stolen. He or she will ask the company IT department to restore the data, only to be informed that the IT department doesn’t backup laptops because it’s too much trouble. Shortly after this, the newly hired IT director will implement the Commvault Edge solution, not only protecting the executive’s new laptop but allowing access to important documents via mobile devices. The executive will be very happy with all these cool new features. The former IT director will implement CommVault Edge at his next job.
Prediction No. 5: Data will grow
At least one organization will find itself surprised by how much new data it accumulates in 2014. Assuming that data couldn’t possibly grow as much as it did in 2013, they will be shocked to find that, oh yeah, it sure can. After mulling it over for a while, the IT department will determine it needs to do something about all that data because it figured out that a lot of data gets created and is never used again. IT will decide it needs an archive solution, and they will be amazed to learn that CommVault Simpana software actually lets you backup and archive in a single step. After successfully implementing the Simpana software solution and putting an end to its data growth nightmare, the IT staff will celebrate by throwing a bunch of servers off the roof.
And there you have it! OK, so these aren’t the most daring predictions in the world, but we strive for accuracy above all things. And we're sure these predictions will come true – not the imagined details, of course, but the numbered statements. Let us know if you have any predictions of your own. And with any luck – and with some Simpana software – none of the dilemmas we’ve predicted will happen to you.
