Get to the Cloud

I wanted to call this 'Get to the Choppa,' but while that would have satisfied my need for humor, nobody would have had a clue what this article is about – namely, how you get to the cloud is important!

When you’re traveling abroad, knowing the language definitely comes in handy. The native jargon is important in ensuring smooth communication and getting the most value out of those engagements. So why should it be any different with technology or the cloud? It’s 'interesting' to see the hodgepodge approaches that many vendors still employ to coerce data into the cloud. 

For some, it’s a third-party proprietary bolt-on - a stopgap to try and keep pace with market demands. Some recent players in the data protection market that you would expect to be cloud ready move their data to the cloud by replicating from a physical proprietary appliance to a virtual instance of that device in a supported cloud. Putting an appliance in the cloud seems heavy-handed. It's definitely not agile. Other vendors require you to leverage a proprietary gateway to first stage, then push the data into the cloud where you might not even know what data is where at any given time. See a theme there? It's the need for proprietary devices to further restrict where that data can go or what you can do with it.

What happened to speaking the language? Why should getting to the cloud be so hard?

What if you could:

  • Write directly to Glacier without the need to incur the added costs of also needing to run EC2 instances?
  • Know exactly what data resided where?
  • Recover that data wherever you needed it without the need of a special magic box?

Those are questions you must ask yourself about your current solution or as you are evaluating new solutions, especially if you are serious about using the public cloud. 

Native cloud integration:

  • Speeds processes with native data capture and migration to any cloud platform.
  • Reduces costs by directly writing to the cloud itself.
  • Speeds access and utilization by reducing process 'wait times' by 30 percent.
