Commvault HyperScale Appliance: Answering 5 Business Challenges

Posted 05/31/2018 by Phil Wandrei

Trivia is a favorite pastime of many people. Whether it is a board game, trivia night at your local brewpub, or America’s favorite quiz show, many people enjoy knowing the correct answer or learning new fun facts. Or coming up with wild and crazy guesses.

In the spirit of trivia, here are five questions I am often asked about the Commvault HyperScale Appliance and their responses:

  1. How does the Commvault HyperScale Appliance simplify my environment?

Commvault HyperScale Appliance simplifies environments by eliminating do-it-yourself backup solutions and consolidating the operating system, backup software, compute and storage. As a fully-integrated appliance and built on Commvault software, it provides greater end-user efficiency and includes automation and self-service capabilities. In addition, it is all managed through a single, web-based user interface. As an appliance built on a scale-out architecture and Commvault software, it is a simple, elegant solution.

  1. How does the Commvault HyperScale Appliance deliver greater availability?

Commvault HyperScale Appliance, actually any Commvault HyperScale solution, delivers greater agility, resiliency and availability.  Commvault HyperScale Appliance has both multi-node and disk redundancy, which means it can lose multiple disk drives or a single node and it will continue to protect your data and applications. Also, in the event of a hardware failure it provides faster recovery compared to traditional

scale-up systems based on hardware RAID.  Commvault HyperScale Appliance provides the availability and resiliency that your data and applications require.

  1. What are the benefits of a scale-out architecture?

A scale-out architecture enables the seamless expansion of compute and storage. When additional capacity is needed, additional storage nodes are added to the existing storage pool. This seamlessly expands the storage pool without having to remove or upgrade the original storage. With scale-out, organizations are no longer faced with forklift upgrades; having to replace and remove their existing systems to grow their storage, and incur an expensive and risky data migration from the old to the new system. Another benefit of a scale-out design is that it delivers predictable performance as storage and compute are added together.

  1.  How does the Commvault HyperScale Appliance reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)?

If we look at a traditional build-your-own backup solution, organizations spend a significant amount of staff resources having to deal with all of the individual components separately.  A traditional backup and recovery solution will have a separate operating system, backup software, server, storage and networking components. With Commvault HyperScale Appliance, all of these items are consolidated into a fully-integrated appliance. Imagine the staff savings, aka Operating Expenditures (OpEx) savings, from having an integrated backup appliance versus having to deal with five separate components for each of these activities; acquisition, installation/integration, administration, patches and updates, and support.  With an integrated backup appliance, organizations are able to realize significant time savings over traditional build-your-own solutions.

  1. What are ways to consolidate my environment?

I outlined earlier how Commvault HyperScale Appliances consolidate individual components for OpEx savings, but let’s apply that same concept to your entire backup and recovery environment. How many different point products are you using today, from deduplication storage to cloud gateways?  All of these point products exponentially increase the complexity and can lengthen recovery times. Rather, what if you had a single backup and recovery solution with a web-based user interface to manage your entire environment? And what if it had industry-leading integration with applications, VMs, storage and cloud platforms to further automate your environment? With Commvault HyperScale Appliance you can have it all, and go from “what if” to “I have."

Collectively, these five Q&As are what sets Commvault HyperScale Appliance apart from its competitors. Commvault HyperScale Appliance simplifies your environment as a fully-integrated appliance built on a scale-out architecture to deliver the benefits of Commvault software. And isn’t that what we all want for our organizations; reduce the complexity in our jobs and use our time more wisely.
