How To (Really) Fix Backup And Recovery

Some organizations might initially scoff at the idea that existing data backup processes are broken. Some might even say, “How could that be possible? I have backup solutions in place for my various applications across different locations. If something else comes along that I need to protect, I simply go out and get a backup tool to address that need.”

And therein lies the problem. While this approach might work at first, it adds complexity and is inevitably unsustainable.

IT leaders want better backup and recovery

Working with IT leaders around the globe, we listen to learn more about backup, recovery and data management challenges. Three consistent issues are crystal clear:

  • More flexibility is needed to support the arrival of new applications and storage locations, including the cloud.
  • Data protection policies are challenged by an escalating number of backup and recovery tools.
  • Data fragmentation is increased by data stored in multiple cloud providers and coming from SaaS applications. Data protection becomes even more challenging.

George Crump’s recent blog, “Why Backup Breaks and How to Fix It,” brought to light these backup and recovery challenges. With the need to protect new environments and applications continuing to increase, organizations that attempt to address that need by adding more specialty solutions just exacerbate the problem. It’s a scenario that, left unchecked, can lead to some extremely undesirable consequences.

While backup is important, recovery – and more specifically: recovery point (RPO) and time objectives (RTO) – is all what your end users truly care about. Companies and end users both expect “instant” data access as well.  And on this front, service level agreements are only getting stricter.

How to Fix Backup and Recovery

Most information technology specialists we talk with these days have similar requests:

  • Backup and recovery needs to be simplified
  • Data protection standards need to be better defined across the organization
  • Data needs to be managed across the organization, regardless of where it resides (on-premises or in the cloud)

Bringing together backup and recovery processes in a way that reduces complexity and confusion makes a lot of sense. Along with that, addressing RPO and RTO needs while providing the flexibility to account for future growth is also essential. 

A simple, single approach to backup and recovery is at the heart of the Commvault methodology.
