Top Cloud Data Migration Trends From Commvault GO 2018

By Penny Gralewski

Cloud data migration was a hot topic at Commvault GO 2018, the only industry event dedicated to backup and recovery for the progressive enterprise. Customers, partners, systems integrators and Commvault cloud alliance partners shared amazing success stories about cloud data protection projects.

Here are the top cloud data protection trends we saw at Commvault GO 2018.

  1. Cloud data protection is in every phase of cloud data migration

The message was clear: cloud — and cloud data protection — is on the radar for organizations of all sizes, industries and geographic locations.

Even in the Commvault GO customer keynote panel, we learned Commvault customers are in different phases of cloud data migration. Some are exploring cloud, others have a clear multi-cloud strategy, and extremely progressive organizations have a solid plan to close their on-premises data centers.

In every phase, cloud data protection is high on the priority list.

2. Have a cloud strategy

From the Commvault GO keynote stage customer panel to the hallway conversations in the expo, organizations of all sizes talked about their cloud migration strategy.

Some organizations are working across the business, engaging different departments to ensure cloud-based data is included in the backup and recovery strategy. Others are planning cloud migration phases with their local strategic partner or global system integrator.

In our Commvault cloud customer panel discussion, Juan Beetge of NewsUK and Craig Fonseca from Dow Jones (NewsTech), both had similar planning advice. Whether you’re using AWS, Azure or any multi-cloud combination, they recommended creating a strategy with people from Commvault, your cloud provider and your strategic partner. The right teams need to be in the room to develop a cloud data strategy.

3. Show initial successes in data migration

Cloud data migration isn’t something that happens overnight – but it can be fast if you use the right tools.

A Commvault GO attendee from the University of Central Florida shared details about their project to move their entire archive storage to Microsoft Azure.  The 66,000 student university used Commvault and Azure Data Box for the archive migration, completing the project in just 13 days over a school break.

4. IT modernization can mean budget reallocation for cloud

Whether official or unofficially, IT leaders are finding cloud budget within IT modernization projects. The money for a cloud project may be hiding in your existing IT budget.

At Commvault GO, Travis Remington, Assistant Director, Instructional Innovation and Technology at Georgia State University, shared the cost benefits of their move from tape to Google Cloud Platform. (Read more about Georgia State University, Commvault and Google Cloud Platform).
