What a day in National Harbor, Maryland! The day started off with two inspirational keynotes from Robert Swan, Officer of the British Empire, who shared his remarkable adventures as the only person to have walked to both the North Pole and South Pole, and Commvault CEO Bob Hammer, who talked about the shift from Information Technology to Data Technology.
Swan is leading the 2041 Climate Force Challenge, which starts Nov. 15 and ends Jan. 11, 2018. The expedition is using only sustainable, renewable energy. During his talk, Swan shared his story and passion for protecting the Antarctic, “the only place in the world we all own.”
Swan has dedicated his life to raising awareness of using clean, renewable energy to protect the pristine environment. During the keynote, Commvault CMO Chris Powell came onstage to announce Commvault becoming the official data partner for the 2041 Climate Force Challenge and the expedition. Commvault will provide managed services in the cloud for the next three years. Powell is also joining Swan for the last 60 miles of the expedition, and will plant the Commvault flag at the South Pole.
Hammer’s keynote focused on the fundamental shift happening in the IT market, as companies move from an infrastructure-centric to a data-centric strategic approach. This requires a more holistic approach toward data management and a data-driven investment strategy that drives innovation and competitive differentiation. He highlighted our newest offering, a scale-out data protection solution called Commvault HyperScale™ Technology. Will Hayes, CEO of Lucidworks, joined Hammer on stage to discuss his company’s role in partnering with this new technology.

The morning session concluded with a customer roundtable discussion with Jon Walton, CIO of the County of San Mateo; Paul Petty, Head of IT Infrastructure for Laing O’Rourke; and Mark Trennery, Head of Cloud and Infrastructure for QIC. They shared their thoughts and insights on their experiences with cloud migration. The session ended with each panelist communicating valuable lessons learned.
The rest of the day was filled with breakout sessions, theater presentations and industry specific lab talks. The exhibit hall includes the impressive Commvault Campus, where customers and partners experience Commvault solutions, meet the experts and participate in hands-on labs.
