Today the United States, and about 50 other countries around the world, celebrate Data Privacy Day to raise awareness, promote privacy and data protection best practices. While this official yearly holiday has great intentions, our approach to data needs to be thought about and addressed every day, from the average consumer to our leaders in the enterprise and in Washington, D.C.
As hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, businesses and consumers need to change how they view cybersecurity. If securing and protecting your data was not a No. 1 priority before, it should be now – especially with data being the lifeblood of daily operations and an asset that can deliver insights that make the difference between being a market leader or an also-ran.
According to a Identity Theft Resource Center report, the number of U.S. data breaches hit an all-time high in 2016 with nearly 36.6 million customer records exposed. As data breaches continue to grow, a Centrify study found that 66 percent of Americans will stop doing business with a company if they are breached. Even more alarming, less than half of Americans are satisfied with how corporations have publicly handled cyberattacks in recent years.
At the end of the day, the question is no longer, “How can I keep from getting hacked?’ Rather, it is, ‘When will I be hacked and what can I do to avoid, or at least minimize, the damage from such an attack?’
With this real threat always looming, enterprises need to do more than put technologies and processes in place (i.e. data encryption and strong passwords) that can ward off or alert you to attacks. It also means implementing disaster recovery strategies and solutions that allow you to recover data that if, even through your best efforts, an attack gets through and destroys your data or held for ransom. However, with enterprises dealing with multiple data formats – from dozens or more applications stored on user devices – in on-premises data centers and in the cloud, securing and protecting all this data in a comprehensive, efficient manner is easier said than done.
At the same time, it is not impossible. While hackers are advancing, so is data protection and security.
