As the person responsible for managing all of the servers, backup and storage for two of the data centers at Denver Health, one of Colorado’s premier healthcare institutions and home to the region’s Level I Trauma Center, I strive every day to do my part to support our mission: Provide access to the highest quality healthcare, whether for prevention, or acute and chronic diseases, regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.
Since 1860, Denver Health has been the backbone of both the Denver and Rocky Mountain healthcare landscape. We care for 25 percent of all Denver residents and one-in-three Denver children. And considering we’re often ranked among the healthiest cities in America, I’d say we do a pretty good job!
While I’m not directly involved in patient care, the work my team and I do ensure that caregivers throughout our system have access to the data they need to provide the best care possible. And since implementing Commvault software, the relationship we have with our data has changed dramatically. We understand our data better than ever, we have better visibility and access to our data and the data protection process itself has become easier and more reliable.
We’re confident. And that’s a great feeling.
Here are a few of the areas where our data management operations have really improved since implementing Commvault software:
- Increased efficiency. We run multiple data centers with site-to-site replication for disaster recover. We’re currently 90 percent virtual, which includes our Epic EHR environment. And with Commvault we’ve been able to complete incremental and full backups – more than 1,200 computers – within our SLA of 12 hours. We can also restore data to fulfill search requests within one hour, using Commvault’s virtual repository that allows us to identify and restore data in rapid fashion. Commvault’s deduplication holds down storage costs, making our data growth more manageable.
- Improved visibility. Information management is all about understanding your dark data. With Commvault, we have been able to understand where all of our data resides and have categorized it; we also know what application it is associated with. We now know the importance of the data and the retention requirements associated with it. We can manage all of our data centrally, and the time it has taken for us to restore financial, email, or patient data has gone from hours to minutes. We know what our data looks like from the high performance disk storage down to the tape level, and understand how our data is growing so that we can stay ahead of the never-ending growth of our data.
- Improved data discovery. This is something I get really excited about. We process and transmit a substantial amount of sensitive data. Protecting this data is of the utmost priority. Content indexing from the Commvault data platform has made us extremely efficient at retaining, retrieving and presenting emails, files, documents and other various forms of data – residing across multiple backups – to our legal department, providing an unbroken chain of custody. When enabled, the Remove Duplicates feature in Commvault Search helps to eliminate redundant entries resulting from data discovery, ensuring our legal team is only reviewing single entries in a legal hold scenario. Commvault is a significant improvement over our previous solution, and has made tremendous improvement to the organization’s data retention, recovery and protection capabilities. In fact, we’ve been able to delegate data discovery to individuals outside of our department, improving our efficiency and allowing us to better serve our stakeholders. Most data restoration requests take less than one hour.
- Improved protection for our Epic EHR. In conjunction with our NetApp infrastructure, we have used Commvault’s EHR Data Protection solution for Epic to shave seven hours off of the Epic backup process. We’re able to back up our data more frequently, ensuring that we have a recent copy of data available in the event of a hardware failure or other similar incident. We are able to better manage the data lifecycle in compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements. Ultimately, we have more confidence in our Epic EHR data backup. This is important because of how critical this patient information is to our operations and the care we provide members of our community.
