Ensuring data availability and supporting global manufacturing operations
Since the first Indian manufacturing plant started in 1977, Apollo Tyres has become one of the world’s largest tire manufacturers with sales and operations in Asia, Africa, America, and Europe. Through multiple international acquisitions over the years, Apollo Tyres has established production plants in India, Hungary and Netherlands. With an extensive distribution network across the globe, the company offers premium tyre products for passenger, commercial, and agriculture vehicles under two global brands: Apollo and Vredestein.
The entrepreneurial spirit of the leadership at Apollo Tyres is always working towards the growth of the organization. When it comes to new technology, Neeraj Mehta, Head of Corporate IT at Apollo Tyres said that one of his key responsibilities is to bring in the right technology and ensure the systems or services are aligned with the business goals.
Traditionally, Apollo Tyres used tapes for backups, but this process could take days to retrieve the correct tapes and restore the data. There was also a huge risk that the data might be corrupted or unrecoverable. Since then, the company changed to performing backups from disk. With the vast volume of data across multiple geographies, it became increasingly difficult to manage backups and caused data availability issues.
“The previous tape and disk backups were time consuming and unreliable,” said Mehta. “By deploying Commvault HyperScale Appliances in five locations, we now have a single platform to securely and rapidly back up and restore data from SAP applications, servers, virtual machines, and endpoint devices.”
Automating endpoint protection to prevent data loss
Apollo Tyres had a lot of data being downloaded or uploaded from 1,200 desktops and laptops with almost 2TB of data in each hard drive. There were also thefts or damage of laptops when staff members travelled from one location to another. This posed a significant risk to the company that their data might end up in the wrong hands or be unrecoverable.
“End users often avoided or asked to forget about the recovery because the process was slow or the data restored was not usable,” said Mehta. “By automating endpoint protection with Commvault, restoration is available immediately and the entire process has become like a well-oiled machine. Backups of laptops and desktops data are just running in the background, without impacting user productivity.”
Apollo Tyres can now centrally manage the endpoint protection by using the Commvault® Command Center and its self-service portal. They also use the encryption and built-in ransomware protection features to ensure the hard drive is encrypted, so no one can see the data if a laptop is stolen or lost. This helped to mitigate the risk of data loss and any compliance/regulatory issues.
“A senior manager was supposed to give a presentation for a critical project but his laptop was stolen during transit. With Commvault endpoint protection, we restored the entire data in a new laptop within a couple of hours rather than days. So, he was able to deliver the presentation to our clients without any impact,” Mehta explained.
With the deduplication capability of Commvault, Apollo Tyres can easily manage data growth while improving the overall storage capacity by over 75%.
“We keep incremental backups and full backups for different periods, so the backup sizes are many fold that of the original data,” said Mehta. “Thanks to the scale-out infrastructure of Commvault HyperScale Appliance, we have confidence that the data can be restored quickly, and the usability of data is higher than what we had before.”
A single point of contact for support
Apollo Tyres evaluated various solutions but decided that Commvault HyperScale Appliance was the best fit for its business needs.
“Commvault HyperScale Appliance proved to be reliable and easier to manage. Its simple licencing policy, availability of skillset in the market to manage the appliances, and good support service were also important for us,” said Mehta.
“By leveraging the optimization of software and hardware components in Commvault HyperScale Appliance, we’re no longer required to deal with multiple vendors and maintain so many nuts and bolts, but now have just one single point of contact for any issues,” said Mehta.
With the support from Commvault Professional Services, Apollo Tyres successfully installed Commvault HyperScale Appliances across five locations within the timeframe. The company is also moving non-core applications, such as email and non-SAP systems, to the cloud and planning to use the cloud-based backup services with Commvault.
“If you don’t get a good implementation partner, you would not be able to harvest the best result. Commvault Professional Services is knowledgeable, and provides good framework of support,” said Mehta.
