Introduction to Commvault HyperScale Software
With Commvault HyperScale Technology, you can build a unified, modern data protection and management platform that delivers cloud-like services on-premises. The purpose of this technical specification is to detail the Commvault HyperScale with SuperMicro 6029P-E1CR24L storage server requirements for the Commvault Validated Reference Design. By building these services on a scale-out infrastructure and leveraging Commvault capabilities, you’ll enable:
- Cloud-like agility, resilience and availability to data and applications on-premises
- Greater end-user efficiency through automation and self-service capabilities
- Improved hardware utilization and optimized costs due to general-purpose hardware
- Seamless storage scalability with predictable performance without the need for forklift upgrades
- Better data protection through elimination of point products and data silos
By shifting the secondary storage and data management infrastructure to this architecture, enterprises can go a long way in transforming their data centers to be as operationally efficient, resilient and scalable as public cloud infrastructure. Lower hardware costs, operational efficiencies and simplified support allows for the replacement of limited and legacy backup tools with a modern cloud-enabled data management solution. More importantly, this architecture, which extends into the public cloud, allows enterprises to offer consistent sets of services to all workloads running on-premises or in public cloud, independent of the underlying infrastructure for a true cloud-based data management platform.
General availability designation
This configuration is classified as generally available, meaning it has been tested and validated as per the Commvault Validated Reference Design Program. This configuration is subject to change upon updates to part numbers or when components are replaced due to hardware life cycle. Validated reference designs are developed to provide an optimal platform for the workload in question with cost, resilience and performance as criteria. Commvault collaborates with SuperMicro to create fully supported design specifications. Substitutions or modifications to validated designs could result in unsupported configurations. Any substitution or modification to a validated configuration must therefore be approved by both Commvault and SuperMicro. This configuration is currently orderable for customer deployment and supported through Commvault support channels.

The Commvault HyperScale Software with SuperMicro 6029P-E1CR24L storage server is well-suited for supporting workloads such as Commvault HyperScale. The 2RU optimized configuration accommodates various component level flexibilities to support all features and use-cases required by customers, while also reducing customers’ total cost of ownership (TCO) with increased business agility.
How to use this document
This document covers the design components of Commvault HyperScale architecture, providing options for purchasing the infrastructure for a Commvault HyperScale Software solution. Commvault Validated Reference Designs deliver tested configurations with leading hardware vendor platforms that provide validated designs complemented by best practices that will accelerate ROI, reduce complexity, and add customer value.
The document is broken into a high level component section detailing the configuration and specific component options that can be selected depending on the storage density, metadata, and optional I/O components that are required. Each subsection provides guidance for ordering.
This document does not cover overall architecture and design of Commvault HyperScale™ solution and should be considered as a supplement specific to the particular hardware vendor.

Data storage options
Data storage houses the data footprint for the customer environment. Data storage configuration directly impacts the amount of data that each node in the solution is able to store.
When deploying Commvault HyperScale Software, choose identical node configuration, including hard disk drives (HDDs) density and quantity, within the block of nodes. If the nodes in a block have different HDD sizes, the lowest size will be chosen for the data storage, which would lead to wasted resources on nodes with larger HDDs.
Separate node blocks in the same grid may use different HDDs (e.g. mixing a 3-node 8TB block with a second 3-node 10TB block in the same grid).
Overall sizing and retention varies by customer and therefore is beyond the scope of this document. Please refer to Commvault HyperScale™ sizing documentation link below to determine the drive size (and node quantity) required for the specific deployment

Bill of Materials
Commvault has partnered with SuperMicro to create a SRS SKU for the validated Commvault Hyperscale solution. There are also SKU’s for disk-packs with each disk-pack consisting of six HDD’s of a particular density. The number of nodes and disk-packs to be purchased is a function of the desired backend capacity. The SRS SKU method allows for easy ordering and fulfilment of required hardware without deviating from the tested configuration. The SRS SKU includes a set of three servers with a base set of components. Cards for specific connectivity are shown under the heading “I/O & Add-on Cards”. The type of I/O card to be purchased depends on the customer‘s connectivity needs. Please note, there is one SIOM slot and two available PCIe slots in each server to house I/O and add-on cards. Each SRS SKU purchase should also include the SKU for hardware service warranty (SMSAD3) as it is based on the capacity purchased. Items such as power supplies and chords are country specific and have their own regional kits.

I/O & add-on cards
Note: There are two (2x) available PCIe slots and a SIOM on each hyperscale server node.
These two PCIe slots and the SIOM need to be populated optimally to provide a minimum of 4x 10/25G Ethernet ports and any other connectivity requirements such as Fiber-Channel (FC) for Intellisnap/tapeout or Ethernet for dedicated replication traffic. It is therefore important to use the SIOM for Ethernet connectivity. Best-practices recommend the use of ports from separate cards (Ethernet/FC) for better resilience. An additional NVMe card for housing (say) Cloud copy metadata does not use a PCIe slot.

If the customer backend capacity need is about 250TB (TiB) with FC connectivity to Tapes, the ordering can be one of the following:

Where SRS-CVHSEM2401-CS071 is for 3x server nodes configured as supported, 6x HDD-FRU-12TB-CS071is for a total of 6x 6 = 36x of the 12TB SATA HDD’s (12x in each node), one each of AOC-S25G-i2S-O and AOC-M25G-i2S-O in each server provides a total of 4x 25G Ethernet ports and 3x AOC-QLE2742-CS071 is for a certified dual-port FC HBA in each of the three Commvault HyperScale™ nodes. The final SMSAD3 is for hardware support services for the three nodes based on capacity.
A second supported configuration to meet the same backend capacity (250 TiB) is as follows:
- SRS-CVHSEM2401-CS071 + 6x HDD-FRU-12TBSAS-CS071 + 3x AOC-MTG-i4S-O + 6x AOC-QLE2742-CS071 + SMSAD3
Please note above configuration consists of NL-SAS HDD’s in place of SATA, presence of four FC ports and all four Ethernet ports on the SIOM.
