Commvault was formed in 1988 as a development group within Bell Labs, and later designated as a strategic business unit of AT&T Network Systems. In 1996, it was incorporated as an independent company.

In the 20 years since, Commvault has experienced tremendous growth, pioneered numerous industry-shaping innovations and established itself as a respected data and information management leader.

Commvault incorporates and takes its first steps.

April

On April 19, Commvault filed for incorporation in Delaware.

May

Then on May 22, DLJ Merchant Banking and the Sprout Group completed a management buyout of Commvault, with 65 employees, from Lucent (which was spun off from AT&T).

1997

The company introduces an innovative, integrated software suite.

In September, the company introduced Vault 98, the only suite of storage management products specifically designed for complex, heterogeneous environments.

1998

A new management team takes control.

In March, Bob Hammer and Al Bunte joined Commvault as chairman, president and CEO and vice president and COO, respectively.

1999

Commvault’s software wins kudos.

In June, Commvault won its first product award from Windows NT Magazine (now Windows IT Pro Magazine).

2000

Native Windows software changes the game for enterprise data storage.

In May, the company launched Galaxy 1.1, the first enterprise storage management solution built from the ground up on the Microsoft Windows platform.

2001

With new funding in place, Commvault turns to community building.

In January, Commvault raised $33.6 million in mezzanine funding.

February

In February, the company held its inaugural event for Commvault Hockey Helping Kids, a charitable program devoted to helping various children’s organizations. Since then, the Commvault Hockey Team has played three to four charity games per year with customers and partners in NHL arenas across the United States.

2002

New software integrates data management functions.

In October, the company delivered QiNetix™, the first integrated platform for data protection, availability, migration, storage resource and SAN management.

2003

Commvault manages data throughout its lifecycle and forms a new alliance.

October saw the launch of QiNetix™ 5, which integrated email archiving with backup and recovery, migration, replication and storage management to manage data throughout its lifecycle.

December

In December, the company signed an OEM agreement with Dell.

2004

Commvault becomes a leader in enterprise backup/restore.

In April, Hitachi Data Systems signed an agreement with Commvault to offer co-branded QiNetix™ software as “Hitachi Data Protection Suite, powered by Commvault.”

December

In December, Commvault was the first vendor to make the information lifecycle management (ILM) vision a reality by adding the unified data classification functionality in QiNetix™ 6.1.

2006

Commvault goes public.

In March, we opened a representative office in Beijing, China.

September

In September, Commvault began trading on NASDAQ under the symbol CVLT, with initial public price of $14.50 per share.

Commvault’s single platform redefines data management.

February

In February, we signed the 400th reseller to in our PartnerAdvantage channel program. And in April, the company’s employee count reached 1,300.

2012

Commvault rings in the new year on Wall Street.

Commvault moves its headquarters into a new state-of-the-art, $146 million building in Tinton Falls, N.J.

November

Commvault moved into its new $146 million, sprawling 278,000-square-foot global headquarters in the fall. The state-of-the-art, four-story glass building was built on tranquil property that once belonged to the Fort Monmouth military base. The campus includes a softball field, basketball court and a walking trail among its perks.
