Alan Atkinson, Chief Partner Officer – Concentration on highest value projects


2023 will continue to be challenging for companies from an economic perspective, especially those that are neither profitable nor public – leading many organizations to seek opportunities for cost reductions.

There will inevitably be cutbacks and ultimately some failures, and partners and customers will be reticent to adopt solutions from vendors that do not have a clear path forward. This, combined with various inflationary pressures, will require partners to drill down on enabling the very highest value projects. Ransomware, cloud migration, and digital transformation will remain priorities that get funded, while other areas of business will likely be deprioritized. Consolidation will be key in addressing these needs. Partners and customers will not be looking for more providers, but rather providers that offer more solutions. They will make bigger bets with more concentration, aligning with vendors that offer a wider breadth of coverage and support in cost-effective delivery models.

A top, if not the top IT priority for organizations in 2023 will most certainly be cybersecurity. Significant amounts of IT budget spend will be allocated and invested in technologies to prevent, detect and recover from inevitable cyberattacks not if, but when they occur. As cloud adoption in a SaaS (Software as a Service) model continues to proliferate the market, organizations will leverage solutions that provide proven piece of mind knowing their data is safe and recoverable in a timely fashion. Trust will be given to organizations that can clearly articulate cybersecurity best practices that align to a customer specific use case and objectives.

Continuing on the theme of cybersecurity, emerging technologies and trends will be inclusive of both AI (artificial intelligence) and automation. Organizations typically have predictable network and data usage patterns. As data continues to grow exponentially within the realm of the “internet of things” and those patterns deviate within a network or data repository, humans simply cannot keep track of anomalies in real time. As such, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions that collect, process, analyze and report threats in an expedited and accurate manner will continue to become more ubiquitous. Integration and adoption of such technologies within a zero-trust architecture will be of greater top of mind for CISO’s and security specialists as the years progress.

As mentioned earlier, data consumption will continue to flow from on premise to cloud applications using a SaaS model depending on use case. Hybrid solutions, both on-prem and cloud-based will continue to exist for a number of years as companies look to both balance and ensure data immutability and speed of recovery in the most cost effective manner. As new regulations continue to evolve specific to data security practices, data management solutions that provide a complete and comprehensive set of tools addressing those practices will also evolve. In summary, as the threat landscape in IT continues to grow and increase in complexity, organizations attempting to address this complexity for customers will focus on developing more diverse and broad software solutions that simplify recoverability and accurate reporting regardless of where that data resides.

The IT organization will take steps to lower the carbon footprint of its data to support corporate sustainability goals. Adopting more sustainable business practices has become a strategic priority of organizations worldwide as they become increasingly aware of how important sustainability efforts are to the success of the business. In fact, Gartner predicts that by 2025, 50% of CIOs will have performance metrics tied to the sustainability of the IT organization. IT teams will need to take steps to reduce the carbon footprint of their data through responsible data management practices, to support overall corporate sustainability goals. Responsible data management practices make it possible to control the total amount of data produced, thereby reducing the energy needed to create, store, manage and protect it.

As the population progressively gets older, it becomes increasingly difficult for companies to recruit new and fresh talent into the IT industry. As a result, the skills gap is widening and businesses are having to rely less on people to drive innovation, growth, and stability, and move towards a more automated world, where technology can bridge the gap.

This transformation is already well underway, and many organisations are taking advantage of environments, such as the public cloud, to help them automate many of the processes that historically required human beings. Orchestration and automation technologies can go a long way towards helping with this transition by integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning into their solutions. This has been adopted widely throughout the past year to help plug the skills gap, but with costs set to rise to unprecedented levels, it will continue to grow in 2023 as a solution to reducing costs whilst keeping systems running.

– Resilience and Cloud Native Technologies

In 2023, the economic uncertainty will continue to grow in the midst of massive data growth and increasingly constrained IT resources. This will result in moving the enterprises from transformation initiatives into a resiliency. We expect the executives to take defensive posture to address known issues and doing more with constrained resources. IT resiliency initiatives will increase the adoption of AI/ML technologies such as self-monitoring and management of IT assets and automation and orchestration of IT activities across on-premises and cloud.

In last few years we have seen tremendous growth in Hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud initiatives across the enterprises. In 2023, we expect organizations to double down on cloud native technologies. Similar to the physical to virtualization shift, we will see enterprises moving from virtualization technologies to adopt more and more Kubernetes, containers, and DevOps across on-premise and cloud deployments.

CIOs need a holistic approach to data protection

As we enter 2023, CIOs will need to take a holistic, situational approach when assessing their data storage target map. Companies may blindly adopt cloud or on-prem based on general recommendations, but the decision should be highly dependent upon how the data will be used.

CIOs need to focus on five main areas – scalability, flexibility, agility, security, and cost. Cloud for instance checks off many of these boxes, but could account for a significant portion of a CIO’s operating budget, whereas data center investments are mostly allocated to capital budgets. It is critical for CIOs to look at the full picture.

The number of applications, clouds, platforms, utilities, tools, and various other data workloads and locations to run them is multiplying. Just to frame this a little let’s just look at one of the bigger providers out there, AWS.  Prior to AWS reInvent in late November 2022, they had over 200 applications and services within their catalog for customers to leverage and build on. They then introduced at their annual event another 50+ including many highly specialized databases and tools.

That’s a lot, and that’s just one vendor. With this growing diversification is my prediction, and one seconded by Gartner at their recent IT Infrastructure, Operations, and Cloud Strategies Conference in Las Vegas just a few weeks ago: 

The applications and workloads you are running today, and where you are running them, will not be the applications and workloads or places where you will be running them in tomorrow. 

The impact here is equally diverse.  

  • Skills Shortages: The constant shifting of data workloads will mean that most organizations will not have the in-house skills to keep up with the changing platforms and services they are depending on to drive their business forward and remain competitive. 
  • Data Protection/Management Challenges: It is already a daunting task ensuring that all of your data sources are not only protected but secured from the growing threats to them. Many businesses are stuck relying on multiple niche or point product solutions in order to tackle this challenge because there simply are not many options out there that can cover it ALL. Now imagine all of those data sources and applications moving and changing on a regular basis, most tools today just can’t keep up and this will lead to overlapping siloes adding complexity, cost, and overall risk to the business. 

To address this, businesses will be turning more and more to partners who provide the broadest possible spectrum of support for data protection and data management to ensure that as their data platforms change, their solutions not only can keep pace, but already provide the needed coverage. This will enable organizations to adapt and transform with significantly less friction as they don’t need to revisit data protection and management with each step. This also supports a number of other initiatives such as sustainability and ESG as it enables the consolidation of tools and reduction of infrastructure and consumption of other resources such as the power and water that fuel that infrastructure.

– Cloud-Native will become the norm

Digital transformation is needed to maintain a level of innovation and competitiveness within the market. Add in a turbulent and uncertain economy and businesses will need to focus on cloud cost management to strike a balance between the two. Some may think a cloud-native adoption would take the back burner during these uncertain times, but a recent survey from Forrester reports that forty percent of firms will take a cloud-native-first strategy in 2023. Organizations will invest more in cloud-native technologies, such as Kubernetes, to realize greater efficiencies instead of continuing to invest in legacy infrastructure.

As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 16, his life and legacy as a Civil Rights Leader remains so important to highlight as we start 2023. With so many things that have been accomplished in racial and social justice movements, there is still a global journey towards equality for all.

To be successful in our roles as IT professionals, we frequently need to juggle a variety of responsibilities or “wear a lot of hats” – especially when it comes to the important matter of protecting a company’s great asset, its data. 

Let’s pause to explore the characteristics of each hat and how it relates to the data protection responsibilities of a IT Professional:

The baseball cap – Readiness

Foreseeing and thwarting potential dangers to information security. As IT leaders, it is our responsibility to protect data and foresee any weaknesses. This entails continuously scanning for potential dangers and preventing them before they become an issue. Utilizing solutions like cyber-deception allow for an early warning system and provide that shade needed before you get blinded by an attack.

The fedora – Flexibility

Modifying data protection tactics to fit the organization’s evolving needs. As IT executives, we must be ready to modify our approach to data protection to match the shifting requirements of our organization. The digital landscape is always changing. To remain ahead of potential dangers, this can entail putting new security processes into place or modifying current ones. Additionally, an IT leader must consider the latest technologies from cloud to containers and even possibly consider older tech when involved in mergers and acquisitions.  These scenarios all require a robust data protection solution that is scalable and flexible.  

The beret – Creativity

Inventing innovative ways to safeguard data in an increasingly complex digital environment. As IT executives, we must be able to think creatively and develop novel ways to safeguard data in a complicated digital environment. The cybercriminals are often a few steps ahead and might have more resources than your internal IT staff, the only way to combat this is to have elegant solutions to complex problems.  Nothing is more elegant than a beret…

The top hat – Decision Making

Making decisions that secure data and shield the organization from potential dangers while also ensuring that data protection and security are top organizational priorities. As the “top hat” of the company, it is our duty to make sure that data security and protection come first, to make choices that secure data, and to defend the company against any dangers. Our customers, employees, shareholders and even our peace of mind rely on knowing that IT leaders are securing the data and information of our company.  

In conclusion, IT leaders have a lot on their plates and need to be knowledgeable in a variety of fields.

On National Hat Day, let’s take that extra moment to recognize the various hats they wear and the crucial role they play in ensuring the smooth and effective operation of our companies.

2022 was a BIG year for Cyber Security.  According to Cyber Security Hub, more than 4100 data breaches were publicly exposed with a number of high-profile attacks including Twitter, Optus and WhatsApp.

In today’s world, bad actors are well organized, informed and also persistent with the volume and speed of attacks increasing.  Their motives are changing, with data leakage, exfiltration, theft and restructure being top objectives causing data damage to now be the top concern of IT decision makers.

So what does 2023 hold? We’ve gathered thoughts from experts across Commvault to answer that very question. 

Industry-Wide Shift to Proactive, Early Threat Prevention 
– Matt Tyrer

In short, businesses will need and begin to implement proactive solutions to constantly monitor their environment to catch threats and enable early warning/response.  Bad guys are getting in, and we aren’t knowing about it early enough. 

From a cyber security and threat defence perspective, the industry today could be essentially divided in two approaches: 

  1. Preventative Measures: These vendors are your perimeter defence vendors like firewalls, anti-virus, SIEM/SOAR tools, along with other data loss prevention (DLP) and intrusion detection/prevention solutions. Even the newer identity access management (IAM) security vendors, who are adding key security functionality to control who can see what in your environment, can be grouped in here. They are all the locks on your doors and windows actively working to keep the bad guys out of the house so that they can’t even start the fire. 
  2. Reactive Measures: These tend to be the storage and most conventional backup vendors who are focused on protecting the data itself. Aiming to ensure it is available for recovery via table stakes features like immutability and anomaly detection (threat hunting) in the backups. These solutions are the sprinkler system and fire alarm – by the time they are triggered your house is already on fire and your only response is triage and disaster recovery. 

Don’t get me wrong, both of these are critical parts of a layered security posture and strategy but there is a gap which where early warning lives.  It’s the abilities to better respond when a breach occurs, while not waiting for data damage to be done before recovery is kickstarted.

This is why my prediction is an industry wide shift to more PROACTIVE warning systems, helping companies fill gaps between their preventive and reactionary toolsets.

Rise in Managed Services Provider Spending

The Institute of International Finance is predicting a global economic growth rate of just 1.2% in 2023, a level on par with 2009 when the world was only beginning its emergence from the from the financial crisis.1 Even with economic uncertainty looming, expect that cybersecurity spending will continue to rise but don’t be surprised if there is a decline in product and service spending.

And even while cybersecurity spending increases, according to a Jefferies CIO survey, 53% noted they would cut ITSM spending. If this happens, I would expect to see a rise in spending on Managed Service Providers (MSP). MSPs specialize in specific IT segments and can offer expert IT experience as they attract and retain talent, whereas organizations have difficulty doing so.

To remain vigilant against ransomware and data security, organizations must adopt a ransomware strategy and develop an incident response plan against bad actors. Incorporating a multilayered security framework is also vital to safeguard your data and reduce cybersecurity risk. Industry and Platform Consolidation

Currently, the security space is very convoluted. There are so many tools out there and lots of businesses have multiple solutions to make sure that they are fully protected. However, we have seen the industry start to consolidate and this should continue into 2023. All of the components need to work together in order to operate at maximum efficiency and stand the best chance of being protected. Consolidating them into one platform will be essential to ensure that you are getting the best out of your solutions and having a single pane of glass is key to managing them. Especially as costs continue to rise, organizations must ensure that they are spending every penny wisely and getting optimal output from every purchase.

Yet, due to the sheer amount of threats facing businesses, there is also a growing understanding that not everything can be stopped, no matter how great your solutions are or how effectively you manage them. Organizations should turn their focus to resilience. It is almost inevitable now that businesses will be attacked at some point, but what really counts is how quickly you can recover from it. Regular backups should be taking place so that, even if the worst does happen, downtime is kept to a minimum and normal business operations can be restored as quickly as possible with little lasting damage.

“Inside-out” CyberSecurity, Tiger Teams and Managed Services

Cyberthreats continue to reach record highs, both in the number of successful breaches, as well as the damage incurred as a result of these attacks. As we look ahead to 2023, experts project these trends to continue to move in the wrong direction as adversaries employ new sophisticated tactics, hackers-for-hire networks continue to expand, and the security/IT skills gap widens. And while these negative forces present difficult challenges to navigate, organizations will take a big leap in the coming year to better plan, invest, and mature their cybersecurity disciplines.

Prioritization

Breaches happen. But not all assets, systems, and data are created equal. Given that a small percentage of information assets carry the majority of business risk, progressive companies will begin employing an “inside-out” cybersecurity strategy. One that starts with hardening and securing their most critical assets first – then working toward the perimeter. While perimeter defences and preventing intrusion will (and should) remain a paramount focus, this risk-aligned approach enables the prioritization of defence strategies to mitigate risk for high-value assets and functions. This reshapes conventional “outside-in” approaches, making security investments more accessible and operational.

Tiger Teams

To better manage emerging threats and respond to risk, we will continue to see a rise in fusion teams (thanks Gartner for the term!) – merging IT, security, and operational stakeholders together to drive change. These blended teams help create new synergies by pairing complementary (but often siloed) groups and capacities to achieve common goals. These cross-functional teams increase visibility across the organization, discover and eliminate blind spots, and optimize investments in existing and new tools. While many mature organizations already leverage fusion teams today, 2023 will see a more widespread adoption of these functions to better identify risks, implement cyber response strategies, and manage threats.

Managed Services

As threats mount, businesses will continue to adopt managed service (MSP) and managed security service (MSSP) offerings to augment existing tools and tactics. This is particularly true of lean IT departments and those looking to enhance their security operations centers. Leveraging these managed providers will enable organizations to close the cyber security skills gap, tap into a consortium of specialized solutions, and scale their cyber practice without managing additional headcount or disparate solutions.

AWS re:Invent 2022 just wrapped up, and for me, I have finally made it back to Australian shores for our non-snowy, hopefully, hot Christmas Day.

On the long flight(s) home I was able to reflect on the 119 new services and features that were announced as part of AWS re: Invent 2022 from Nov 28 – Dec 2nd, and the myriad of new capabilities we announced in our latest innovation release, Commvault Platform Release 2023 (released Dec 15th, 2022).

I know I felt like a kid in a candy store trying to decide what I’m going to try first when I return to the office in 2023.

I saw four major themes emerge across re: Invent that underpin the responsible building of secure and sustainable cloud native applications. Builders need to consider security of data in-transit and at-rest, responsible scaling, and cloud operations that respond to planned and unplanned events:

Securing the cloud, which continues to be Job Zero for both AWS and builders alike as we strive to build more data-driven applications, that are more accessible than ever before. Some notable releases that will positively impact AWS and Commvault customers looking to protect their AWS resources were:

Scaling Cloud Operations was a recurring theme for almost all service and feature releases. As businesses expand in AWS service adoption and consumption, they need to be able to scale or automate their cloud operations. Some notable enhancements to help achieve cost-optimized operations were:

  • AWS announces Systems Manager Quick Setup for Resource Scheduler which simplifies the setup of scheduled resource power-up, power-down, and optimization of capacity to save costs.

    Commvault automates the power management of MediaAgents by powering Amazon EC2 data management resources on and off as backup and recovery activities occur. This approach saves runtime costs but migrates resource optimization to an event-driven scalable approach. You can automate resource power management. backup, and recovery operations with Commvault too, just grab an access token to access the Commvault service endpoint and start automating today.
  • Amazon CloudWatch launches cross-account observability across multiple AWS accounts and helps you monitor and troubleshoot applications that span multiple accounts. This is often critical for your data management system, like Commvault where your protected workloads and data management workloads reside in different accounts.

    Commvault recommends using AWS resource tags on all your AWS resources to improve visibility, cost transparency, and support automation efforts. Commvault ensures tags are restored on all created resources and allows the setting of tags during recovery to align with your observability, cost management, and security needs.
  • Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP announces four new ease-of-use features added more usability enhancements to the fully managed shared storage service built on NetApp’s popular ONTAP file system. Customers looking to expand into AWS, lift-and-shift applications with high-IOPS storage needs, or reuse on-prem storage management processes in AWS – can now adopt Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP.

    Commvault announced IntelliSnap® snapshot management for Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP in Commvault Platform Release 2023. Customers can orchestrate application-aware snapshots and service-independent streamed backup copies of Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP SMB shares, NFS exports, and iSCSI volumes. Snapshot-based backups can be replicated using NetApp SnapVault and SnapMirror between Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP file systems or between on-prem and the AWS Cloud.

Expanding to new Regions and Zones was a common theme across 2022 with AWS expanding availability into three new regions – Europe (Zurich) eu-central-2, Europe (Spain) eu-south-2, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) ap-south-2  and up to a total of 281 AWS Local Zones. AWS services and resources are now even more available to begin your 2023 migration projects.

Commvault makes migration simpler, more secure, and faster by converting and replicating UEFI-based VMs to Amazon EC2, including the programmatic modification of on-prem Linux hosts to automatically inject required Amazon EC2 nitro OS drivers. New toys for builders is what re: Invent is all about, and 2022 was no exception.

  • Amazon RDS Optimized Reads is now available for up to 50% faster queries on Amazon RDS for MySQL offers up to 50% faster query processing compared to previous generations. Depending on the data protection scheme employed, this performance may deliver significant performance to data management activities that share processing resources on Amazon RDS instances, more in the future when our lab testing completes…
  • Introducing Elastic Network Adapter (ENA) Express for Amazon EC2 instances delivers enhanced networking performance via the introduction of the Scalable Reliable Datagram (SRD) protocol. Higher single flow bandwidth and lower latency between EC2 instances could deliver significant backup and recovery performance, more when we emerge from the Commvault labs…
  • AWS announces Amazon VPC Lattice (Preview) is an application layer networking service that simplifies the connection, securing and monitoring of service-to-service communication. As monolithic applications become more and more decomposed, and more and more decoupled – Amazon VPC Lattice becomes crucial. Commvault will watch this service closely with potential applications to our Amazon EKS and Amazon VPC protection portfolio.

The holiday period is upon us, and for me that means one thing, watching Die Hard. 

I may have a soft spot for Kevin McCallister and the charm of Home Alone, but Bruce Willis going up against a band of resolute (and Alan Rickman obviously aside) bad actors (sorry – couldn’t resist the pun) intent on gaining access to a vault of untraceable bearer bonds is the perfect holiday film.

But as I settle down watch it this year, I am struck by the parallels between the movie’s plot and a ransomware attack.  So, what lessons can Die Hard tell us about a ransomware attack?

1. Size of Attack Surface matters

The location for the majority of the Die-Hard action was the Nakatomi Plaza – a 30 plus floor sky scraper in the heart of Los Angeles. 

From airducts to elevator shafts, lobbies to rooftops, and everything in between, there’s a lot of real estate to secure and a lot of places for bad guys to hide. 

Now a data estate is exactly the same.  The more surface there is, the more vulnerabilities and failure points there may be to access or compromise your data.  And it is a big concern, in fact according to recent ESG research, only 12% of IT professionals report that their ransomware detection tools are adequate and can also cover the growing data estate, regardless of where data lives.

2. A ransom might not be what they are after

Remember that scene when Alan Rickman lists names of terrorists that the gang wishes to exchange for the hostages?  It’s a smokescreen with the aim of misdirection. 

The same is true in data security – with so many bad actors using data now in malicious ways (think leakage, exfiltration, theft and restructure) – holding data hostage for a sum of money is a prime objective anymore.  In fact, so much so that ESG estimate that preventing data damage is now the top concern of IT decision makers (88%) overtaking the concerns around recovery.

And if you actually pay the ransom, there is little guarantee that you will get your data back. In fact, according to Matthew Woodwood – only 8% of all ransomware-paying organizations got their data back even after paying the ransom.

3. Social Engineering – The bad actors will have done their research (and are very sneaky)

Just like in Die Hard, the attackers would likely have done their research and will have a sophisticated and detailed plan – that are designed to do more than just data encryption.

They are also sneaky and may employ social engineering tactics, which is a popular tactic among attackers because it is often easier to exploit people than it is to find a network or software vulnerability.  Passwords and existing security measures are very valuable and internal employees are often targets – at all levels of the organization.

4. The attacks will keep on coming (and coming)

As well as being well informed, motivated and cunning, our attackers are persistent.  John McClane would have had a much easier job if he was fending off just one bad actor, but the reality is (as with in a ransomware attack) the numbers are stacked against him.

For attackers, a single-minded strategy rarely leads to a successful breach. Threat actors increase their chance for return on investment by following multiple paths to their target – critical business data – by diverting their attack strategies. 

5. Don’t “just” rely on recovery or insurance

If Bruce Willis just waited it out with the hope that insurance would pay out, then it would be a pretty short film, and one that might not have had a dramatic ending!  

Cyber Insurance is an area that has changed rapidly over the past 12 months.  Clauses around cybersecurity insurance are increasingly tightening – as evidenced by Lloyds of London earlier this year.  Many insurers are also imposing stricter safeguarding requirements, which although helping to support increased levels of cyber security defences, this can also leave some organizations and especially SMB’s exposed, as they are less able to meet the new minimum threshold limits.

Conclusion – A Proactive Approach to Ransomware is essential (be more John McClane)

OK – all film metaphors aside, we do have a serious holiday (and beyond) message for everyone.

I’m proud to be the Executive Sponsor of our CapAbilities ERG, an employee group whose mission is to raise awareness and break down the bias of workplace issues that affect people with disabilities and/or caregivers of those with a disability. We recently had a Courageous Conversation virtual event, in partnership with our Family Support Network EAG, on managing your career while caring for a loved one with a disability. I was fortunate to be able to share my own story with the support of Commvault. In honor of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd, I wanted to share my story here as well.

My daughter Emily, now 18 years old, was born with Goldenhar syndrome, a rare craniofacial condition. She was born missing her entire lower jaw, and her craniofacial problems have required her to have more than 40 surgeries to date. While she’s come such a long way since the day she was born, Goldenhar syndrome is something she will continue to live with throughout her entire life.

I’ve been at Commvault for almost 18 years, so Emily’s journey began within my first year at Commvault. When Emily was born, I basically had to mature overnight. And I have to admit, Emily’s story was not something I shared immediately with my colleagues. There were countless times I took conference calls from hospitals and waiting rooms, and nobody knew. But as I matured professionally and became more comfortable, I went from hiding Emily’s story to advocating for it – Emily’s story eventually became a part of me at Commvault.

Our job as parents of children with disabilities is to give them the opportunity to have the best life possible, and that’s something my wife, Nancy, and I have always focused on. It’s all about advocacy – when you start with advocacy, then change will happen. And over the years, as we continued to advocate for Emily, we also instilled within her the importance of advocating for herself. And moreover, to never, ever, stop. Part of Emily’s early advocacy outreach included Bring Your Child to Work Day at our headquarters office multiple times early in her teen years.  Emily brought her service dog and shared her story with our Vaulters. She loved doing it, and this opportunity jumpstarted her own advocacy journey, as she began to present at schools and talk to students about her story. Over the years, Emily’s mission has been to spread awareness about kindness and acceptance to kids of all ages by doing presentations live on-site, through video conferences, and on social media. I couldn’t be more proud of her.

Emily’s journey has taught me so much, both personally and professionally. While there have been so many life sessions and learning moments, a few that we focused our discussion on during our Courageous Conversation are:

  1. Listen and pay attention to detail. When doctors start using fancy words, you have to listen. When you’re home dealing with your child with a disability, you have to be able to listen to what they’re saying (and not saying) and pay that close attention to detail. These skills have not only taught me to be a better father, but a better professional as well. Staying present and listening helps me do my job better and best support my team.
  2. Value the impact of support. It’s incredibly important to accept the support you may need, and sometimes that means being vulnerable. Lean on the resources available to you and leverage them. As I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t always open to sharing Emily’s story and accepting support at work. But to manage work-life balance and be my best self at Commvault, I realized how impactful a support network really is.   
  3. Embrace life’s challenges. Navigating the unknown and overcoming obstacles is what makes us stronger at home and at work. While there have been so many challenges related to Emily’s disability, I realize how much I have learned and grown from our situation. The life skills I’ve developed have not only made me a better person at home, but they’ve made me a better colleague and leader at Commvault.

Without the support of Commvault over the past 18 years, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Showing how we care is foundational to who we are as a company. Our CapAbilities ERG is creating a safe and empathetic space where Vaulters with disabilities, caregivers, and allies can openly and honestly have discussions and drive change together.

When I look back, I wouldn’t change a thing about Emily’s journey and our situation. It’s made me who I am today, and Emily continues to shine and make a difference in the world every day.

A ransomware attack is far more likely to occur today than ever before, and any organization could fall victim. According to the FBI’s 2024 Internet Crime Report, 67 new ransomware variants were identified in 2024 alone, demonstrating the rapidly evolving threat landscape that organizations must defend against.

Ransomware complaints increased by 9% in 2024, with cybercrime losses reaching $16.6 billion – a 33% increase from 2023, the report revealed. If companies fall victim to an attack not only may it affect revenue, but it may also hurt their brand.

Air Gapping as a Deterrent to Ransomware Attacks

Air gapping adds a layer of security to help safeguard your data and mitigate ransomware risk. It is designed to isolate and segment secondary or tertiary backup copies and make them inaccessible from the public portions of the environment.

If your organization is infiltrated by ransomware or a malicious attacker, the cyber threat will have a limited attack surface. The public portions of the environment may get infected, but the isolated data will not because it cannot be accessed, changed, or deleted. The backups are safe, secure, and available for restoration.

Compare air gap to defending a medieval castle. The castle is surrounded by water, and the only access to the castle is if the drawbridge is let down periodically to bridge the gap. By storing a backup copy on a storage infrastructure that is physically inaccessible from an external connection, you restrict access and drastically limit the potential for infection.

The cloud-native landscape is rapidly evolving, with 85% of global organizations expected to be running containers in production by 20251. To continue to meet business goals while enhancing business agility and streamlining operations, you need a holistic, comprehensive data management solution for your entire data estate.

Commvault has always been at the forefront when protecting new technologies, with containers and Kubernetes no different. We have built broad support for protecting applications running on a Kubernetes cluster and their data. Every CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation) certified Kubernetes distribution is supported, and via the CSI (Container Storage Interface) framework, we also support a wide range of storage providers on Kubernetes, ensuring you have complete cloud-native data protection, managed through the simplicity of a single data management solution.

In this new release we bring two new key capabilities to Kubernetes data protection:

  • Full Cluster & namespace level protection.
  • Protecting the ETCD.

Recap

Commvault allows users to easily onboard a Kubernetes cluster into the Commvault Command CenterTM aka the single pane of glass for all your data protection, data management and data lifecycle needs.

Commvault defines a Kubernetes application as anything that is a pod or a collection of pods viz: Deployments, ReplicaSets, Statefulsets etc. and their associated components as inferred from their application yamls.

To break that down a bit, when we look at an application like a Deployment, we look at its config. spec. and discover any PVCs (Persistent Volume Claims), Secrets, ConfigMaps and other associated entities. All these together constitute an application.

A user can browse an onboarded cluster for applications, select and group them together into an “Application Group” based on backup SLAs (Service Level Agreements), retention needs or any other criteria.

Users can add applications to Application Groups in a few diverse ways:

  1. Browse and pick all applications in a namespace or multiple namespaces.
  2. Select specific applications.
  3. Use dynamic discovery rules: e.g.: Select applications that match a particular label selector or name etc.

Dynamic discovery is especially useful where a backup administrator can have the devops teams set label selectors on their applications and be guaranteed specific protection SLAs (Service Level Agreements).

Backup jobs run at an Application Group level and use the content rules to discover existing and newly created applications and their resources on the cluster at run time and perform backups. PVCs are backed up using CSI when available or alternatively Commvault can attach to PVCs directly using ReadMany semantics if CSI is not available.

With Commvault, restoring an application or its data can be done at various granular levels:

  • Application level restore: An entire application along with its associated resources and data can be restored in one shot.
  • Application files: An application’s data (or portions thereof) residing on PVCs can be restored piecemeal without having to restore the entire application.
  • Application configuration files: Configuration files constituting an application can be restored as files so that a user can manipulate them before applying them to the cluster.

Enhancements

It is now time to talk about the exciting new enhancements, delivering complete Kubernetes protection, and included in Platform Release 2022E.

1. Full Cluster Protection

With this feature we have added an easy button for the backup admin to press: Pick up everything on the cluster please. Thank you very much!

Everything in the cluster including cluster-scoped resources is picked up when configured in this manner.

Additionally, namespaces that are freshly discovered at backup time are also automagically included.

Backup admins must no longer select individual namespaces or applications within a namespace to be fully protected.

2. Namespace Level Protection

In addition to an entire cluster, users can now choose to backup an entire namespace i.e., applications (and their resources) and any unreferenced resources within the namespace (we call them orphans).

Also, users are now able to restore namespaces in their entirety while still retaining the various granular restores explained above.

3. Protecting the etcd.

etcd is a distributed, replicated database that Kubernetes uses to store the cluster configuration. The image below illustrates the usage of etcd in a typical Kubernetes cluster.

Each control plane node has a replica/copy of the etcd.

Losing/corrupting these copies can wreak havoc on a Kubernetes administrator’s day (or week).

Since etcd is replicated across the master nodes in a Kubernetes cluster, traditional solutions attempt to protect etcd by protecting the master nodes. This is often achieved by deploying solutions on those cluster nodes to protect the etcd locally. This is unwieldy and cumbersome at best because it separates protection for the applications running on the cluster and the protection for the cluster state into two very disparate mechanisms. Protecting application state and protecting cluster state go hand in hand and separating the two can lead to inconsistencies esp. when recovering from a disaster.

Commvault now seamlessly integrates etcd protection right alongside application and full cluster protection into the Command Center. A user simply needs to enable a toggle on the cluster to protect etcd and select an SLA. That is, it! Really! (See the snapshot below)

With these enhancements we have developed a holistic comprehensive solution for your Kubernetes Data Protection needs and, integrated it into our Commvault Command Center so you can simplify management of your entire data estate from a single interface. No wonder Commvault continues to be an outperformer in this space.
