Throughout May, we’ve celebrated Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month across our global Vaulter community with open dialogues and educational initiatives hosted by our Multi-Culture Employee Resource Group (ERG) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team.

AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the global contributions, achievements, and cultural heritage of Asian and Pacific Islanders, including our Vaulters who identify as Asian and Pacific Islander. It’s a time to recognize the diverse cultures, histories, and experiences of AAPI communities and their significant impact on American society and beyond. This year’s theme, selected by the Federal Asian Pacific American Council, was “Advancing Leaders Through Opportunity,” which builds on a leadership advancement theme series that began in 2021.

The AAPI communities include a rich history of cultures, traditions, and experiences, intersecting in many ways, and consist of 50 distinct ethnic groups, speaking over 100 languages – with connections to Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Hawaiian, and other Asian and Pacific Islander ancestries. Within these diverse groups, intersections emerge through shared values, struggles, and aspirations. Whether it’s the convergence of languages, traditions, or migration stories, these intersections foster solidarity and unity, while also highlighting the unique challenges that different segments of the AAPI population face. From the common threads of discrimination and prejudice to the celebration of cultural heritage and achievements, these intersections serve as focal points for dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy, driving the collective pursuit of equity, representation, and empowerment.

To conclude AAPI month, we hosted a virtual event where Vaulters challenged their knowledge, discovered fascinating facts, and connected with each other in a vibrant trivia game that offered a unique and engaging way to learn and celebrate Asian Pacific heritage. Engaging our Vaulters in these activities fosters a sense of inclusivity, appreciation, and understanding of the rich tapestry of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures within the workplace.

Creating a space for open dialogue and reflection for AAPI members encourages mutual respect, empathy, and solidarity among AAPI Vaulters and their communities. Our goal here at Commvault is to promote a more inclusive and supportive work environment where everyone feels valued and celebrated for their unique backgrounds and identities.

As the executive sponsor of Commvault’s Veterans Employee Resource Group (VALOR ERG), I wanted to share my perspective on Memorial Day, a U.S. holiday that was created to honor and remember those who have fallen while serving our country.

In many of our local communities, as we look up, we may see banners and salutes to these heroes from their loved ones and neighbors who cherish and rekindle the memories of, not only the fallen, but many service members who sacrificed physical or mental capabilities as part of their service commitments.  As you drive around your town, take a moment to look up and see if you can spot some of these memories, or as you race to your plane, take note of the photo boards celebrating those who have or are currently serving.

Our VALOR ERG is focused on bringing awareness to the value our veterans contribute to the private and public sectors. We aim to provide the skillsets veterans will need to have a competitive edge in technology today. We encourage a supportive work and life environment for veterans and their families. As a U.S. Navy veteran myself, it has been an honor to help lead this inspiring group of Vaulters and allies.

Earlier this week, our VALOR ERG hosted a virtual event for all our Vaulters to attend in honor of Memorial Day. The event featured guest speaker Rick Yount, founder and executive director of the Warrior Canine Connection, a pioneering organization that utilizes its Mission Based Trauma Recovery model to support recovering combat veterans and their families.

Rick shared more on the organization’s mission to provide veterans with a regained sense of purpose through the opportunity to engage in a critical military support mission while simultaneously receiving treatment for their own symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and traumatic brain injuries.

Rick also shared how he pioneered the first therapeutic service dog training program at the Palo Alto, California, Veterans Hospital in 2008. Rick’s new program concept, involving veterans with PTSD in the training of mobility service dogs for fellow veterans, has yielded very positive results. He has presented the program concept at forums, including the Veterans Administration National Mental Health Conference and the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies.

We were honored to have Rick join us and have this discussion centered on the importance of supporting veterans and giving them and their families the resources they need. We also were joined by several four-legged friends, as our Vaulters were encouraged to tune in with their pets.

We often hear about the importance of diversity in terms of race, gender, age, and ethnicity. However, there is another type of diversity that is just as crucial to cultivate in today’s workplaces – neurodiversity. In honor of April being Neurodiversity Awareness Month, I wanted to share more about this topic and how we’re exploring it at Commvault.

I’m a proud member of our CapAbilities Employee Resource Group (ERG), which is focused on raising awareness and breaking down the bias of workplace issues that affect people with disabilities and/or caregivers of those with a disability.

Neurodiversity refers to the variation in how people think and process information. It covers conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological or cognitive differences. People who are considered “neurodivergent” have neurocognitive functioning that diverges from what is considered neurotypical or “normal.” At Commvault, we celebrate this diversity of minds and recognize that neurodivergent individuals bring unique skills, talents, and perspectives to the table, all of which are incredibly valuable in a workplace.  

The CapAbilities ERG recently hosted an inspiring event to talk more about neurodiversity in the workplace and how companies, like Commvault, can best support their employees to create a true sense of belonging. Our event took place in our UK office and was open to Vaulters across the world to join virtually. We were thrilled to welcome guest speaker Holly Foxcroft, Head of Neurodiversity in Cyber Research and Consulting at Stott and May Consulting.

Holly shared her career journey and why she became so passionate about advocating for neurodiversity in the workplace. She discussed how she started her cyber career in technical recruitment and delivering cyber security training in schools and colleges. When her son was diagnosed with autism in 2014, she became an advocate for neurodiversity in the field whilst also realizing she too was neurodivergent.

Since then, Holly has devoted her time to researching the topic, going to school as a single mother, and pushing for reform. In her position at Stott and May, Holly focuses on the creation of policies and mentorship regarding neurodiversity in employment and research in cyber, as well as best practices, advice, training, and consulting. She also works to improve the support provided to neurodivergent cyber professionals, not just during the hiring process but also by enacting cultural change and combating biases at work.

It was incredibly inspiring to hear Holly’s perspective and advice as we honored Neurodiversity Awareness Month together as a global Vaulter community. A key takeaway I learned from the event was that while initial changes may take some effort, the long-term payoff of leveraged neurodiversity is significant. Companies that embrace neurodiversity can yield improved problem-solving, enhanced innovation, increased productivity, a happier workforce, and a competitive marketplace advantage.

I’m proud to be part of a company like Commvault that celebrates our differences and gives us opportunities to have honest and open discussions about important topics like this.

Here at Commvault, we’re committed to working to sustainably change technology in a difficult world.

As we celebrate Earth Day this year, I wanted to reflect on our efforts to be responsible stewards and limit our environmental impact.

I’m proud to lead our Environmental Employee Affinity Group (EAG), where we create a space for Vaulters with a passion for environmental sustainability to collaborate and connect. We believe that it is our responsibility, as humans and as a company, to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable world.

Over the past year, we have continued to seek innovative ways to bring awareness to the carbon footprint of data and the role our products and services play in mitigating emissions. We have focused primarily on our newly introduced carbon calculator, which allows customers to estimate the emissions impact of using Commvault’s products and services. Our Carbon Reduction Calculator measures the amount of disk storage and energy consumption required before and after deduplication and compression, as delivered by Commvault, and presents this information in terms of more relatable equivalent values such as the number of barrels of oil consumed, number of smartphones charged, and number of passenger vehicles that it could have powered.

We’ll share more on our commitment to sustainability in the coming months in our 2024 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, so stay tuned.
