If you think a ransomware attack is the worst thing to happen to your organization, I hate to tell you – That’s only the beginning.

Don’t misunderstand – an attack is awful. But after an attack, you’re somewhat of a wounded gazelle and the predators start circling. While you may not be responsible for the attack itself, if you mishandle the recovery, regulatory requirements, and communication, you may be hit with fines and lawsuits. And if that isn’t enough: attackers, competitors, and even potential acquirors and activists may seize the opportunity to pounce.

Which is why, as a Chief Legal and Compliance Officer and an independent board member, I believe you need a proven, practiced data protection plan long before your data is compromised. To help you through this, here are four steps I would take in weighing and responding to an attack:

#1 Secure your Perimeter. At the first sign of an attack, you need to slam the door shut, stop the bleeding. CrowdStrike recently estimated that an attack window is 84 minutes. That’s how long you have before data is bricked, exfiltrated, or destroyed. You don’t have time to debate and the moment you need to close all entry and access points to your business, a ransomware attack cannot be first time you bring the cross-functional team of IT, Security, Legal and others together. You need to be a well-oiled machine and act fast. Practice this like a drill. Know what assets you have, what they access – and be prepared to shut it all down.  

#2 Assess the Damage. Once the perimeter is secure, you must assess the damage. What data was exposed or taken? What damage was done? What is your contractual obligation for maintaining and protecting customer or constituent data? How does this impact you in terms of industry, state, federal, and international regulations? There are more disclosure requirements on the horizon and as PwC recently noted its 2023 Global Digital Trust Insights survey, “only 9% of the respondents feel highly confident that they can effectively meet all disclosure requirements.” The sooner your team is engaged in the planning, assessment, and remediation process, the better.

#3 Were you a victim or negligent? Did you leave the perimeter unsecured? Did you have loose access or security controls? Do you have a data protection plan in place? When was your last tabletop exercise or system tests? Were the right controls in place to prevent (or quickly detect) the attack? Do you have cybersecurity awareness training in place for employees so they’ve learned how to identify phishing attempts? Customers expect that when they give you their data, you will protect it. Having a data protection plan or solution in place is the cost of doing business. Without it, you are not a victim.

#4 Communicate. Communicate. Communicate. Be transparent with your critical stakeholders. The speed in which you disclose can be a delicate balance because you’re still assessing the impact, identifying the root cause, and remediating. Clearly, your CEO and C-Suite leaders need to know as soon as possible and you’ll alert your Board of Directors. But the most important people you need to communicate with are those impacted by the breach, such as your customers, partners, or employees. You need to notify them as soon as possible.

Bottom line: The attackers are on the horizon, they get smarter everyday and time is not your friend. These steps will help you detect and recover quicker from an attack and will give you the confidence that you have taken responsible, informed steps to protect your data.

Businesses of all sizes have turned to, standardized on, and leaned into cloud-delivered technology. From private to public, the cloud offers the unique capability to reimagine IT infrastructure and how we develop and consume applications. But as with any modernization process, it doesn’t come without challenges.

Protecting data in and across clouds can be difficult.

Native tooling offers baseline utilities, but cloud platforms aren’t purpose-built for data protection. While leading IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) and SaaS (Software as a Service) providers deliver robust, durable, and highly performant platforms to consume cloud services, they aren’t steeped in comprehensive backup and recovery of data.

With emerging cyber threats on the rise, today’s businesses must understand their role in protecting data stored in the cloud, and the gaps that overreliance on native tooling present to their business (and data).

To start, it’s important to understand your business’ role in data protection. They need dedicated security tools that minimize the risk of an attack on data. They need rapid response capabilities that drive business continuity and mitigate loss. They need standardized management, compliance, and protection that layers across disparate cloud and on-prem environments.

So how do dedicated data protection solutions deliver? Here are three irreplaceable elements of third-party protection for your cloud data:

  1. Isolation and Immutability
    Data protection best practices revolve around preserving and maintaining pristine data copies. This is particularly important when facing data loss at the hands of advanced cyber threats, rogue administrators, or accidental user deletion. At its core, safeguarding data in the cloud demands the need for source-side data isolation.

    With native tooling, production and tertiary copies live within the same security boundary – meaning that impacted production environments could neutralize backup utilizes or data copies themselves. How would I effectively recover if my compromised environment also contained my backups? Air-gapping data outside source environments separates backup data into a separate security domain. This means events occurring in and around cloud platforms cannot also leap into backup copies. Additionally, immutable-by-design architectures ensure data remains unmodified, unaltered, and can’t be tampered with. This further reduces the risk of impact, applying a zero-trust approach to ensuring clean data is available and recoverable at a moment’s notice.

  2. Protection, Recoverability, and Compliance
    Cloud service providers have a lot on their plates. From availability and uptime, to access and performance, best-in-class offerings deliver reliable environments to run your applications and your business. But they can’t be everything to everyone. When facing a data loss event, businesses must have confidence and proven solutions to get data back quickly – without compromise.

    Dedicated data protection solutions offer elevated performance in the realm of backup, retention, and recoverability. This is the ability to safeguard structured or unstructured cloud data at scale, for comprehensive and deep coverage of unique data types living in diverse workloads and applications. The digital age has brought with it a whole host of new challenges, especially the unwelcome and relentless assault from ransomware and other threats. This has been compounded by pandemic and the hybrid workplace, which has broadened the attack surface for phishing and other social engineering attacks that target employees’ home offices and data.

It’s not just business, it’s personal.

As Security and IT professionals, we’ve done what we can to harden our environment accordingly. We’ve strengthened our perimeter, stayed on top of our endpoint controls, security patching, embraced zero-trust guiding principles, and introduced more proactive and rigorous data protection strategies. It’s a constant evolving battlefield with complexities and challenges. We do this at the speed of business while being mindful of our spend to manage risk and deliver great service to our customers.

But let’s face it. Today, in most cases, you are your family’s Security or IT practitioner. And data (and the subsequent threats) goes wherever our employees go, which is all the more reason to extend cybersecurity awareness education and training programs outside the office to ensure our people are ready to be our first line of defense.

As a CISO, here are my recommendations for doing this:

First, if it isn’t already, investing in ongoing awareness programs needs to be one of your priorities in 2023. Protection is not limited to one person or one team. A CISO and its team of security practitioners are core to a Security program, however the true strength is in numbers. In other words, by educating and engaging the entire organization on online safety protocols, businesses can be better equipped for cyberthreats. This starts with teaching them how to recognize phishing emails or malicious links containing malware; identity theft prevention techniques; and use encryption and password best practices.

Next, you need to encourage them to take proactive steps to protect their home and office networks, which includes physical security vigilance by protecting their devices and being vigilant of their surroundings. Maintaining regular software updates and security patches; securing their home wireless networks; encrypting sensitive data and files to ensure authorized access; setting strong and unique passwords; and using multi-factor authentication as an extra layer of protection. Frankly, it’s good hygiene for work and for home.

Last, but certainly not least, as a CISO or IT professional, you too need to get personal by creating an atmosphere where employees feel comfortable asking questions about data protection. This comfort, trust, and open line of communication is critical to engage with your workplace and for employees to own their safety measures.

It’s not enough to hope that you aren’t impacted by an incident or breach. It’s improbable. After all, it’s just a matter of time until you are attacked. And cyberattacks have become increasingly sophisticated, with malicious actors using a range of tactics to gain access to your assets and sensitive information to disrupt your business or personal life. Phishing emails, ransomware campaigns, and malware downloads are just the start, so make sure your employees are educated, engaged, and ready for whatever little devil arrives at home, in the office, or on the road.

Cyberthreats have proved to be a perpetual game of cat and mouse. Security teams, on one hand, aim to stay one step ahead, leveling up defenses to uncover and ward off new forms of cyber threats. At the same time, bad actors are constantly evolving to employ new techniques that exploit vulnerabilities and outmaneuver even the most sophisticated of security stacks. And stealth is the name of the game… New forms of attack, including Living Off the Land techniques, are stealthy and once again upping the ante and challenging business’ ability to detect threats – before data is compromised.

Constant Innovation Fuels Cyberthreats

For security teams, they already have their work cut out. From the cloud to the data center, data lives in more places than ever before – and it all needs protecting. That’s a lot of ground to cover, and one weak link introduces risk and potential avenues for attackers to exploit. If that wasn’t challenging enough, cyberthreats also don’t exactly sit still. They’re constantly innovating with new tools and techniques that silently bypass security tooling and compromise systems, applications, and environments. Take for instance Locker malware, which was particularly popular in the late 2000s. Locker disrupted computer access by injecting malicious code to lock users out. Access was only regained when victims paid a ransom. Antivirus tools eventually caught up and Locker became too bulky and slow for a good success rate of attacks. Threat actors recognized this and flipped the script, favoring a new form of stealth technique that was quieter, faster, and could bypass recently improved antivirus technology – file encryption.

Advanced, Silent Techniques Threaten Data

Today, cyberthreats once again look different. Silent attacks, which can remain hidden in systems for extended periods of time, pose a unique risk to businesses. Take Living Off the Land techniques that leverage signed binaries (LOLBins), scripts (LOLScripts), and libraries for example. This method, recently deployed by the Volt Typhoon hacking group, is particularly novel and hard to decipher. It doesn’t use conventional malware files but leverages conventional utilities, executables, and repositories to execute its attack. Traditional security tools based on signatures and traffic analysis cannot detect stealth techniques such as LOLBins used by the Volt Typhoon group, as legitimate tools/information camouflage malicious activity to blend in and bypass even the most advanced security defenses. Once more, bad actors have moved the goal posts, leveraging new, stealthy schemas that go undetected and compromise data unbeknownst to their victims.

New Threats Require New Thinking

I’m proud to share our 2023 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, an overview of all the incredible work our Vaulters are doing every day to innovate within our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives.  

Over the past year, we continued to address barriers and biases in our workforce by hiring, mentoring, and empowering employees from underrepresented groups. During the year, they rallied to support local and global causes, including raising money in response to the tragic earthquake in Turkey and the Crisis in Ukraine. Here at Commvault, we’re passionate about investing in and mentoring the next generation of leaders. This is why we started the new year by partnering with Break Through Tech to sponsor internships through their Sprinternship™ program in January.

Break Through Tech works to propel women and non-binary students into computing degrees and tech careers with a vision to achieve gender equality in tech. Their Sprinternship program is offered in three-week sessions during academic recess and has reached thousands of students, with an emphasis on welcoming Black, Latina, low-income, first-generation college students, and non-binary students to launch their tech careers.

Throughout their time with us, the “Sprinterns” tackled real business challenges and were engaged in our day-to-day operations and company culture while demonstrating their skills. We were proud to sponsor two Sprinternship Programs in January: HR Data Analytics and UX Development, with each program having a unique challenge project.

In partnership with my colleague Scott Bice, Global Head of HR Operations and Services, we oversaw the HR Data Analytics Sprinternship. This opportunity allowed students to work with our Human Resources team to develop an HR scorecard, test data in the data warehouse, innovate new and creative ways to display data and tell a story, and provide input and design on KPIs. Throughout the project, they learned how the engagement level of new hires corresponds to their onboarding experience, team experience, and time with managers. In just three weeks, students learned how to use tools like the data cube, work with Power BI, utilize Excel pivot tables to analyze the data, and tell the story of new hire engagement.

 “The Sprinternship program was truly a sprint; a compact three-week internship focused on challenging each other, mentoring for success in the workplace, and providing experiences in the technology space,” said Scott Bice, “The Sprinterns went above and beyond to embrace the opportunity, drive change, and extract value from the experience, which made it a win-win!”

The UX Development Sprinternship enabled students to develop example product pages within our design system site using our React components. Throughout their three weeks, they also acquainted themselves with our suite of products and design system, referencing existing example pages within our design system site codebase and contributing to the design system codebase. These Sprinterns worked as UX developers and gained a newfound understanding of UX and the vital role it plays in STEM. The experience certainly piqued interest in front-end in those that may not have considered a career in this field. And get this – one of our UX Sprinterns even contributed to our code base, which was published on our design system site!

It’s exciting to see the progress these students make within the three-week program. They not only learn from us, but we learned from them as well! Parisa Bazl, Director of User Experience, said, “The Sprinternship program was helpful for us because not only did it make us really create and polish an efficient onboarding process because of its timeframe, but it also offered valuable management experience to our team members.”

Our Chief People Officer Martha Delehanty was ecstatic about the opportunity to get involved and support Break Through Tech’s mission, saying, “Break Through Tech’s Sprinternship program is fueling next-gen-tech talent around the country! This has been a fantastic way for companies like Commvault to invest in future talent AND get fantastic support to drive current business challenges, a win-win! Cyberthreats – like ransomware – are global businesses staffed by malicious actors, state-sponsored hackers, and criminal syndicates looking to exploit any weakness. Yet, while many companies boast ransomware panaceas and their unique ability to solve these security problems, it is not so cut and dry.

For starters, today’s environments are complex. Here are three best practices your organization should consider to design a robust disaster recovery plan that takes full advantage of what the cloud enables.

1. Clearly Define RPO and RTO for your disaster recovery plan

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) are essential metrics to be defined when developing a disaster recovery plan.

  • RPO is the allowable period of time that can pass during a disaster event until the amount of data lost exceeds the maximum threshold that has been set in an organization’s business continuity plan.
  • RTO encompasses the entirety of an organization’s business operations and applications. It is defined as the maximum period of time an organization can remain functional during downtime caused by a disaster event before operations are either substantially restricted or taken offline altogether.

Defining RTO and RPO helps organizations decide on a clear and explicit disaster recovery plan framework to ensure their recovery goals are met during a disaster event. Update them periodically, especially if your organization has migrated to the cloud in place of legacy on-prem backup solutions.

2. Routinely test your cloud disaster recovery plan — and update it accordingly

An unproven disaster recovery plan is one prone for potential failure.

It’s best to identify potential issues in your recovery plan on your own terms instead of finding out the hard way during a disaster event. Routinely test your disaster recovery plan to expose any shortcomings and see if any updates are required to reflect any changes and evolution in your organization’s IT needs.

3. Leverage cloud-native backup for cloud disaster recovery

The sheer amount of data being used on a daily basis has grown exponentially just within the last few years alone — a major reason why the majority of businesses have migrated to the cloud to leverage its scale and elasticity.

If your organization has moved its data and workloads to the cloud, it only makes sense to use a cloud-native backup solution that has been created specifically for the cloud. Once the cloud backup solution has been deployed, data can be automatically backed up and stored in the cloud. That way, if the data is lost or compromised due to an incident (such as a physical disaster or a ransomware attack), the most recent backup copy can be recovered and restored from any location.

However, in order for cloud backup to provide the necessary aspects needed to facilitate disaster recovery, it must provide two key capabilities:

  • Ensure the data backups are stored securely

Malicious threats like ransomware don’t just target an organization’s current data — they typically go after the backups as well. If they can steal both the primary and backup data, you are essentially at the mercy of criminals while facing potentially devastating data loss and downtime. This is precisely why backup copies should be securely stored in an air-gap manner isolated from primary accounts.

  • Rapidly restore the specific mission-critical data and workloads required to maintain business continuity

Some data is more important than other data, especially in terms of keeping operations afloat. If a disaster event threatens your data and processes, you likely don’t have time to wait for every last bit of data to be restored during recovery. You need a way to quickly prioritize and restore the mission-critical data required to keep your processes and end users online.

Here at Commvault, we celebrate our diverse Vaulter community and honor the history of those who came before us.

This Monday is Juneteenth, a day which honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. We’re proud to observe the Juneteenth holiday on Monday, June 19, to commemorate history and celebrate African American culture.

Although Juneteenth is celebrated in the United States, our efforts to create awareness and have conversations on topics close to our hearts remain a key part of our global culture and core values.

This past February, I was joined by board member, Shane Sanders for a Courageous Conversation webinar panel hosted by our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team and Multi-Culture Employee Resource Group (ERG) to celebrate Black History Month. During our conversation, he shared his perspectives on how the theme of “equity in action” has impacted him as a Black man and the social cost of not embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

At Commvault, we are committed to furthering our DEI and belonging efforts, in partnership with our incredible ERGs, to create opportunities to drive awareness, have open conversations, and encourage reflection.

What are Data Lakes and Data Warehouses?

Data Lakes

This data can then be processed using natural language processing and machine learning (ML) algorithms to determine customer sentiment towards a product or service.
  • IoT Data Processing: Data lakes are ideal for storing and processing massive amounts of data generated by IoT devices. The real-time ingestion capabilities of data lakes allow for the processing and analysis of streaming data, enabling organizations to monitor and optimize their IoT networks.
  • Data Storage for ML/AI Training: In the medical and biotech fields, data lakes can be used to store data from diverse sources, such as genetic sequences, patient records, and clinical trial results. Machine learning algorithms can be applied to this unstructured data to identify patterns or correlations, aiding in uses from the development of personalized treatments to predicting disease outbreaks. Furthermore, algorithms can analyze real-time data from medical devices to monitor patient health and alert caregivers to any significant changes (See IoT above).
Data Warehouse Applications
  • Sales Analytics: Data warehouses can be used to store and analyze sales data, allowing organizations to identify trends, track performance, and make data-driven decisions to improve sales strategies. The structured nature of data warehouses makes it easy to create sales reports, dashboards, and visualizations.
  • Customer Segmentation: By analyzing customer data stored in a data warehouse, organizations can segment their customer base and tailor marketing efforts to target specific demographics. Data warehouses can store structured customer data, such as purchase history and demographic information, enabling organizations to create detailed customer profiles.
Example Use from Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)

A great example of a company utilizing AWS services to build a data lake is FINRA. FINRA leverages AWS to store and analyze over 500 billion market events daily, enabling them to detect fraud and market manipulation.

FINRA’s data lake, built on AWS, processes and stores vast amounts of diverse data types, including trade data, order data, and reference data. By using Amazon S3, FINRA can store and manage their data cost-effectively and securely, while Amazon EMR and AWS Glue enable them to process and analyze the data to identify potential violations.

The new integration between Commvault and PowerProtect Data Domain delivers immediate value for PowerProtect Data Domain customers with:

The integration of Commvault and PowerProtect Data Domain introduces a simplified native API-based integration. This new capability allows customers to seamlessly integrate with existing PowerProtect Data Domain systems without needing the BoostFS plug-in. This reduces complexity and significantly cuts down the time it takes for customers to begin protecting their data.

Commvault customers can continue to leverage their existing data protection policies and avoid having to create new full backups or worry about increased backup set sizes thanks to the new API-based integrations. Enabling this new capability is as simple as adding a new storage unit for Data Domain Boost with valid credentials in Commvault Command Center.

Historically, Commvault has supported PowerProtect Data Domain systems as repositories, but they had to be configured as Common Internet File System (CIFS) or Network File System (NFS). The new integration enhances the security for backups with native encryption and direct data transfers without mounting a CIFS or NFS file system on the appliance, reducing the attack surface for ransomware.

Customers that leverage Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) will also be able to natively leverage the new integrations. Providing a more secure environment where users can be confident that their data is safe from unauthorized access or manipulation.

Last week, we hosted our FY24 Global Company Kickoff – a time when our entire Vaulter community comes together to kick off the start of our fiscal year, hear from our leadership team on our strategy, and celebrate how we’re going to continue to win together!
