Costs Accelerating with Long Retention
Power Integrations is helping fuel the clean-power revolution. A leader in semiconductor technologies for high-voltage power conversion, Power Integrations’ products are key building blocks in the clean-power ecosystem, enabling the generation of renewable energy as well as the efficient transmission and consumption of power in a vast range of applications, including appliances, mobile devices, e-bikes, power tools, EVs and countless industrial applications. Applications leveraging Power Integrations’ energy-saving technologies prevent billions of kilowatt hours of energy waste annually.

While the move from tape to cloud-based storage freed the company from physical constraints, storing and securing data cost-effectively remained a challenge especially given their long-term retention requirements. As a result, use of public cloud facilities for network area storage (NAS) quickly became unsustainable.

“As a global enterprise, we have a lot of data that’s increasing over time,” said Jacob Gsoedl, CIO. “With a long retention strategy, our cloud storage costs were accelerating quickly, and we couldn’t protect our data costeffectively with the prior provider’s infrastructure.”

Sustainable Economics for the Long Run

Power Integrations turned to Commvault Cloud for a cost-effective long-term cloud storage strategy. A proof of concept soon demonstrated how Power Integrations could use the public cloud more efficiently, reducing recurring costs.

Moreover, projecting Amazon Web Services costs showed more sustainable economics for the company’s hybrid storage model. Commvault is built for hybrid cloud complexity, enabling data security for a lower cost.

“Commvault Cloud gave us a way to dramatically lower our costs and keep them predictable while simultaneously providing us with the data resilience needed to keep our business running,” Gsoedl said, “and as a company whose business is all about saving energy, we are especially pleased that backing up our data in highly compressed form reduces our data center usage and, therefore, our carbon footprint.”

Instead of an appliance-based architecture, Power Integrations gained an API-based solution in Commvault Cloud, freeing it to choose the optimal storage tiers without overbuying. Instead of writing data to S3IA on Amazon Web Services, the company can write the bulk of its data to AWS Deep Archive.

Beyond cost, Commvault Cloud allows the Power Integrations team to manage storage without workaround or patchwork solutions. Cloud-native de-duping, advanced intelligence, and rapid recovery, them visibility across their data and have a unified way to protect and recover it – from any location to any location.

“From an operational standpoint, Commvault is very user-friendly,” Gsoedl said, “we don’t need a full-time backup administrator.”

More efficient tiering enabled Power Integrations to recoup its investment within months, and Commvault Cloud continues to be an economical choice. Since the move to Commvault Cloud, the solution has remained cost-effective even as Power Integration’s retention timeframes increase.
