Throughout May, we’ve celebrated Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month across our global Vaulter community with open dialogues and educational initiatives hosted by our Multi-Culture Employee Resource Group (ERG) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team.

AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the global contributions, achievements, and cultural heritage of Asian and Pacific Islanders, including our Vaulters who identify as Asian and Pacific Islander. It’s a time to recognize the diverse cultures, histories, and experiences of AAPI communities and their significant impact on American society and beyond. This year’s theme, selected by the Federal Asian Pacific American Council, was “Advancing Leaders Through Opportunity,” which builds on a leadership advancement theme series that began in 2021.

The AAPI communities include a rich history of cultures, traditions, and experiences, intersecting in many ways, and consist of 50 distinct ethnic groups, speaking over 100 languages – with connections to Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Hawaiian, and other Asian and Pacific Islander ancestries. Within these diverse groups, intersections emerge through shared values, struggles, and aspirations. Whether it’s the convergence of languages, traditions, or migration stories, these intersections foster solidarity and unity, while also highlighting the unique challenges that different segments of the AAPI population face. From the common threads of discrimination and prejudice to the celebration of cultural heritage and achievements, these intersections serve as focal points for dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy, driving the collective pursuit of equity, representation, and empowerment.

As the executive sponsor of Commvault’s Veterans Employee Resource Group (VALOR ERG), I wanted to share my perspective on Memorial Day, a U.S. holiday that was created to honor and remember those who have fallen while serving our country.

In many of our local communities, as we look up, we may see banners and salutes to these heroes from their loved ones and neighbors who cherish and rekindle the memories of, not only the fallen, but many service members who sacrificed physical or mental capabilities as part of their service commitments.  As you drive around your town, take a moment to look up and see if you can spot some of these memories, or as you race to your plane, take note of the photo boards celebrating those who have or are currently serving.

Rick shared more on the organization’s mission to provide veterans with a regained sense of purpose through the opportunity to engage in a critical military support mission while simultaneously receiving treatment for their own symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and traumatic brain injuries.

Rick also shared how he pioneered the first therapeutic service dog training program at the Palo Alto, California, Veterans Hospital in 2008. Rick’s new program concept, involving veterans with PTSD in the training of mobility service dogs for fellow veterans, has yielded very positive results. He has presented the program concept at forums, including the Veterans Administration National Mental Health Conference and the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies.

That insight struck a chord when I read the book earlier this year, and it’s why I was excited when we booked Josiah Dykstra, Ph.D., the Director of Strategic Initiatives at Trail of Bits, for podcast « The Resilience Rundown » to discuss action bias and its impact on decision-making in cybersecurity incidents.

https://play.vidyard.com/pHRRxCu5Ja6a6YcX746ipS ?

Understanding Action Bias

Examples of Action Bias in Cybersecurity

When ‘Doing Nothing’ is a Good Thing

Dykstra discusses the concept of “doing nothing” as a strategic choice in certain cybersecurity situations. He uses the example of professional soccer goalkeepers in penalty shots to illustrate this point. Research has shown that goalkeepers who choose not to jump or make a move during a penalty shot have a higher chance of blocking the shot. This strategic decision may appear counterintuitive to spectators who expect the goalkeeper to take action, but it is based on careful analysis and preparation.

Mitigating the Negative Effects of Action Bias

Conclusion

Action bias is a common cognitive bias that affects decision-making in cybersecurity incidents. By understanding the potential pitfalls of impulsive actions and implementing strategies to mitigate action bias, organizations can improve their incident response capabilities and minimize the risk of exacerbating cybersecurity threats. To learn more about action bias and its impact on cybersecurity, listen to the full episode of the Resilience Rundown podcast featuring Josiah Dykstra.

I highly recommend following Josiah on LinkedIn and consider reading his book, “Cybersecurity Myths and Misconceptions,” which delves into various biases and issues in the cybersecurity field.

Demystifying SOC 2 Data Protection Requirements

Read more about Demystifying SOC 2 Data Protection Requirements

Enter the looming threat of quantum computing. These powerful machines harness the power of quantum mechanics to solve problems more quickly than traditional computers. This includes cracking the key and encryption standards that safeguard our world of data. This is where post-quantum cryptography (PQC) comes in, and why Commvault has chosen to implement it to safeguard your data.

Why We Need PQC

Many of the asymmetric and symmetric cryptography algorithms we use to protect data from prying eyes rely on mathematical problems factoring in large numbers. While these are difficult for classical computers to crack, quantum computers solve these mathematical problems significantly faster, making what was once thought impossible very much possible.

This could leave any sensitive information that is normally encrypted, such as credentials, emails, financial data, and medical records, exposed. You might think the threat of quantum computing is five to ten years away, but anyone who recently attended the keynote at Ignite/Reinvent/Next would know that quantum computing resources are already available and the technology is rapidly advancing. And now it’s available to anyone, including malicious actors. The question is, how do you shield your organization?

A Multi-Faceted Approach: Bigger Keys, Better Locks, and PQC

Although full-fledged PQC algorithms are still on the way to being standardized, there are steps we can take now to bolster our defenses. One approach is to increase cryptography key lengths on symmetric algorithms, so it takes a longer time to crack encryption with brute-force attacks. This is very similar in principle to increasing the number of pins in a tumbler lock. The more pins the lock utilizes, the more difficult and time consuming it is to crack. The larger and more complex the key is, the harder and longer it takes to replicate or guess.

Secure Post-Quantum Data Encryption

AES encryption has long been the industry standard algorithm for secure symmetric encryption, and in the near term it will continue to be relatively sufficient in securing against quantum brute-force attacks, as long as high key sizes are utilized. Commvault already has standardized data encryption on AES-256, which is the highest supported key length for AES.

To put things into perspective, we can look at Grover’s algorithm to demonstrate the potential threat of brute-force attacks. Grover’s algorithm is a commonly known algorithm used to solve complicated mathematical problems. It also can be used to speed up password brute-force attacks, especially when executed on quantum computers.

With Grover’s algorithm, the time to crack AES-256 encryption still would be impractical due to the key size (it effectively halves the key size) and because the current generation of quantum computers is not quite powerful enough. So, AES-256 is still a viable encryption algorithm in the foreseeable future.

Secure Post-Quantum Communication

When it comes to the asymmetric encryption algorithms (public-key cryptography) that are used for secure communication and digital signatures, things look bleak. This is one of the cryptographic areas at highest risk of impact by quantum computing since RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) and ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) algorithms are severely weakened by quantum computers.

Following public calls to action to develop PQC standards, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) coordinated the solicitation, evaluation, and selection of candidate algorithms for PQC starting in 2016. As of December 2023, the final post-quantum algorithms have been selected, and NIST has begun drafting the recommandations normatives et les publications around them.

Commvault has taken the first steps in incorporating some of the upcoming PQC standards to improve secure communication. Two key components needed to be updated to provide quantum protection:

  1.         Key exchange and encapsulation: Establishes a symmetric encryption key during TLS setup.
  2.         Signature generation and verification: Creates a chain of certificates and authenticates parties involved in the TLS setup, preventing man-in-the-middle attacks.

The traditional key exchange algorithm, ECDH (Elliptic-curve Diffie-Hellman), is susceptible to attacks with the advent of quantum computers. CRYSTALS-Kyber, a NIST-approved post-quantum algorithm, serves as a replacement for ECDH.

However, a secure TLS connection requires more than just key exchange. Both ECDH and Kyber are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. This necessitates the use of a certificate chain and signed/verified messages during TLS setup. Conventional cryptography relies on RSA with large private/public key sizes (2048, 3072, etc.) for this purpose. NIST has recommended post-quantum alternatives for RSA, which includes:

  •        CRYSTALS-Dilithium3
  •        Falcon
  •        Sphincs+

Today’s Best Combo

Customers immediately can begin securing their environment against quantum-based attacks starting in the most recent software release, Commvault Cloud CPR 2024, which leverages CRYSTALS-Kyber for key encapsulation, and CRYSTALS-Dilithium3 or FALCON for digital signature schemes, to provide secure communication within the Commvault® Cloud platform.

Once enabled, data communication within Commvault will be resistant to quantum attacks, while your data is encrypted at its source with AES-256 algorithm, keeping your data safe from modern and future quantum threats. Given that the quantum space is under rapid development, along with additional scrutiny of these algorithms, Commvault Cloud has implemented a flexible framework that allows selection of other algorithms and key lengths, for both key exchange/encapsulation and signature generation/verification, providing a futureproof way to remain vigilant in this ever-changing space.

The Road Ahead

As with all security measures, PQC is yet another layer to implement on top of other security controls to keep you cyber resilient. We recommend using Security IQ to gain insights into your own security posture and implement controls to keep your data safe from quantum and other attack vectors.

Similar to how trust is a continuous process, Commvault’s continual investment in cyber resilience and quantum protection will keep your data safe against ever-evolving threats. You can learn more about Security IQ ici.

We often hear about the importance of diversity in terms of race, gender, age, and ethnicity. However, there is another type of diversity that is just as crucial to cultivate in today’s workplaces – neurodiversity. In honor of April being Neurodiversity Awareness Month, I wanted to share more about this topic and how we’re exploring it at Commvault.

I’m a proud member of our CapAbilities Employee Resource Group (ERG), which is focused on raising awareness and breaking down the bias of workplace issues that affect people with disabilities and/or caregivers of those with a disability.

Neurodiversity refers to the variation in how people think and process information. It covers conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological or cognitive differences. People who are considered “neurodivergent” have neurocognitive functioning that diverges from what is considered neurotypical or “normal.” At Commvault, we celebrate this diversity of minds and recognize that neurodivergent individuals bring unique skills, talents, and perspectives to the table, all of which are incredibly valuable in a workplace.

Nous avons été ravis d’accueillir notre intervenante invitée,Holly Foxcroft, Head of Neurodiversity in Cyber Research and Consulting at Stott and May Consulting.

It was incredibly inspiring to hear Holly’s perspective and advice as we honored Neurodiversity Awareness Month together as a global Vaulter community. A key takeaway I learned from the event was that while initial changes may take some effort, the long-term payoff of leveraged neurodiversity is significant. Companies that embrace neurodiversity can yield improved problem-solving, enhanced innovation, increased productivity, a happier workforce, and a competitive marketplace advantage.

I’m proud to be part of a company like Commvault that celebrates our differences and gives us opportunities to have honest and open discussions about important topics like this.

Demystifying SOC 2 Data Protection Requirements

With cyber threats on a constant rise and impacting not only the largest Fortune 500 companies, it’s critical to introduce the concept of an IRE for organizations of all sizes. At Commvault, we’re at the forefront of this movement with – Commvault Cleanroom Recovery. This solution democratizes cleanrooms, making cyber recovery readiness and resilience readily accessible. With Commvault Cleanroom Recovery, you can achieve this without the expense of dark site locations and complex infrastructure proliferation.

How can Commvault Cleanroom Recovery help determine an isolated recovery environment has not been breached or infected by malware? Anomaly and threat detection tools help keep the data residing in Commvault AirGap  clean, and when restored from AGP, it will be this data that we restore from.

Commvault Cleanroom Recovery is not just about simplicity and security. It’s also about intelligence. We’ve leveraged AI on top of the basic elements, to help enhance the reliability of testing. With our growing security integrations, your organization will be better equipped to handle the evolving cyber threats of the hybrid world. These are the key differentiators that make our solution simple, secure, and intelligent.

Here at Commvault, we’re committed to working to sustainably change technology in a difficult world.

I’m proud to lead our Environmental Employee Affinity Group (EAG), where we create a space for Vaulters with a passion for environmental sustainability to collaborate and connect. We believe that it is our responsibility, as humans and as a company, to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable world.

Over the past year, we have continued to seek innovative ways to bring awareness to the carbon footprint of data and the role our products and services play in mitigating emissions. We have focused primarily on our newly introduced carbon calculator, which allows customers to estimate the emissions impact of using Commvault’s products and services. Our Carbon Reduction Calculator measures the amount of disk storage and energy consumption required before and after deduplication and compression, as delivered by Commvault, and presents this information in terms of more relatable equivalent values such as the number of barrels of oil consumed, number of smartphones charged, and number of passenger vehicles that it could have powered.

We’ll share more on our commitment to sustainability in the coming months in our 2024 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, so stay tuned.

As co-lead of Commvault’s CapAbilities Employee Resource Group (ERG), recognizing and honoring Autism Awareness Month is extremely important to me.

Neurodiversity affects so many people. It is an invisible disability and isn’t always disclosed, which means that companies do not always know if they are providing the right infrastructure for their employees to be successful. Many people are dealing with the diagnosis or care of their children, which can mean increased flexibility in their work arrangements.

Our CapAbilities ERG’s mission is to raise awareness and break down the bias of workplace issues that affect people with disabilities and caregivers of those with a disability. We create a safe and empathetic space where people with disabilities, caregivers, and their allies can openly and honestly discuss issues facing them.

Autism manifests in various forms and impacts individuals on the spectrum in many distinct ways – the need for acceptance and inclusion is at an all-time high.

Autism Awareness Month is a great and gentle reminder to always be accepting and comfortable making space for anyone who is different from you. At Commvault, inclusion and belonging are foundational to our culture. We celebrate our differences and know they make us stronger, together. I’m so proud to be a part of our CapAbilities ERG and everything it stands for.

Why are we doing this?

What does this mean for our customers?

When a ransomware attack is a matter of if, not when, it’s important for customers to have the assurance they can recover clean data and rebuild their applications quickly. We believe that our combined solution will give customers the confidence that they can recover and rebuild critical, complex cloud infrastructure reliably and rapidly.

It takes a team to execute

At the end of the day, we can all dream up an idea. But dreams and hopes are not strategy and execution. It’s the team that builds your idea and brings it to life. I’m so proud of the Appranix team for what they have built and helping us get to today.

Quelques conseils me viennent à l’esprit… Trouvez un mentor. Cherchez du soutien et des conseils. Créez et développez votre réseau.

What are you passionate about outside of Commvault?

Mentoring is something I feel incredibly passionate about. I was lucky and privileged to have great mentors throughout my career journey, and I believe in the importance of paying it forward. Mentoring has allowed me to share my experience, learnings and skills, and if I can make even a slight positive impact on the growth and development of others, I’m fulfilled.

On a more personal note, I’ve recently incorporated cooking into my repertoire. I’ve developed a passion for experimenting and creating new dishes, though I must admit, success isn’t always guaranteed!

Demystifying SOC 2 Data Protection Requirements

It’s truly special that Women’s History Month takes place in March when the spring season kicks off. Spring is known as a time for renewal, when the flowers start to bloom, and we start to have more sunshine with longer and brighter days.

It creates an opportunity for us to redefine our next season as we recover from the winter, start new adventures, hopefully become more resilient through various challenges and welcome an “out with old, in with the new” mentality. And for Women’s History Month 2024 here at Commvault, we had exciting and inspiring sessions that brought us together to discuss how to not only support, but empower, women.

First, we had a Fireside Chat with Board Member Allison Pickens and our Chief People Officer, Martha Delehanty. With Allison’s extensive experience as an investor in Artificial Intelligence (AI), data and vertical application companies, she provided valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of being a woman in a predominantly male-dominated field.

Drawing from her role as a COO thought partner, Allison discussed topics such as go-to-market strategies, category creation and scaling businesses, offering empowering advice for women navigating similar male-dominated career paths. She also highlighted the importance of Commvault’s focus on a culture of inclusion and support for working moms and others.

Women’s History Month is not only a time to honor the achievements and contributions of women throughout history but also an opportunity to recognize the incredible women who are making history today. We have so many inspiring and talented women at Commvault – thank you for continuing to make an impact every day. Your hard work, resilience and determination serve as a testament to the strength and capabilities of women in the workplace and beyond.

Supporting and empowering women is a key component of Commvault’s DEI strategy. Let us continue to uplift and support one another, amplify each other’s voices and work together toward a brighter and more equal future for all.

Demystifying SOC 2 Data Protection Requirements

Read more about Demystifying SOC 2 Data Protection Requirements

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, I have been reflecting on the profound impact of inclusion and mentorship in shaping careers and fostering success. Three years ago, I joined Commvault as the Area Vice President for Enterprise, drawn by the company’s innovative solutions to cybersecurity challenges while providing exceptional leadership and developing a vibrant culture.

I am honored to be part of a team where the desire to succeed and the pursuit of excellence drive us to constantly push the boundaries of what’s possible for our employees, our customers and our partners.  What sets us apart is not just our drive for success, but also our genuine care for each other’s growth and wellbeing.

It is important to recognize that an individual’s aspirations and definitions of success are unique. As mentors, it is our responsibility to listen, understand and empower women to pursue their individual goals to help them explore the career paths they choose with confidence.

And speaking of women empowerment, in honor of International Women’s Day earlier this month, I had the privilege of partnering with Commvault to support two charitable organizations dedicated to mentoring and empowering young women worldwide.

De plus,She’s the First directly impacts thousands of girls annually across numerous countries by ensuring girls are educated, respected and heard through mentorship and education programs.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of working at Commvault is being part of a culture where colleagues genuinely care about each other’s passions, success and personal growth. This culture of support and encouragement has been instrumental in my own journey, and I am committed to paying it forward by inspiring, supporting and empowering those around me to be their best selves every day.
