Commvault Converging on VMworld 2013

Posted 25 August 2013 12:26 AM by Commvault

Commvault is a global platinum sponsor of VMworld 2013, and this year is expected to be bigger than last. I know that’s what every VMware partner promises, but the program our marketing team has put together is fantastic and is getting me pumped up for VMworld. I’ve checked into my flight to San Francisco, confirmed I have a hotel room until next Thursday and have locked into the sessions, parties and events that I’d like to attend. All I need to do now is pack, gather up my sundry cables and chargers and kiss my wife and sons. As I’m getting organized, I thought I’d share what Team Commvault has planned in San Francisco:

First of all, our booth is in the best spot right up front as you walk into the expo hall, so please look for us at booth #1605. This year’s theme is “Take an exponential leap forward in virtual server protection” so expect to see, well, big leaps. In fact, we’ll have our own technical jongleur for entertainment. Really, he’s a cool dude who can juggle and ride a unicycle, all while describing how snapshotting and archiving VMs can save you time and money and increase your efficiency. On top of that, you’ll get worldwide updates from our Simpana 10 News Crew. Trust me, you’ll just have to see for yourself.

Bring along the scratch cards included in your conference bag to potentially win some prizes. Tweet what you’ve learned using the hashtags #VMworld #FutureOfData #CommVault and we’ll enter you into more prize drawings.

Breakout Sessions

We love that the industry is embracing the software-defined platform. Why? Because for the past 17 years we’ve been 100% dedicated to delivering value through modern data and information management software. We have a clear vision, which we call Solving Forward, on how to help customers better protect, manage and access data. That philosophy informs our three breakout sessions, which are all technical level. Make sure you register because space is filling up fast.

Breakout: Leveraging Advanced Storage Capabilities To Meet Today’s Virtual Environment SLAs
Tuesday, August 27th, 1pm - 2pm; Moscone West, Room 3012
Presenters: Don Foster, Jonathan Howard
Session ID: BCO5855

Why go: Complement VADP and CBT with modern data protection techniques that work together to transform your business. We’ll discuss best practices on: applying the appropriate data protection methodology based on application SLA by mapping templates to storage policies; identifying where to use hardware array snapshots; how to identify workloads where HW snaps or VADP are most relevant; recovery options including integration with vCloud Director; and automated recovery options using workflows.

Breakout: Reigning in VM Sprawl – Automating the Reclamation of Unused Resources
Wednesday, August 28th, 1pm – 2pm; Moscone West, Room 3012
Presenters: Jonathan Howard, John Fox
Session ID: VCM5827

Why go: It’s so easy today to provision new virtual machines, that many organizations are experiencing VM sprawl: the proliferation of virtual machines, many of which are only needed for a certain time, and are then orphaned. We’ve been talking about VM sprawl for years, and it never seems to get resolved – until now. We’ll examine ways to mitigate sprawl, and learn about brand new tools available to help VMware admins and Dev/Ops teams automate resource utilization of the data management layer like VM Power Management (to reclaim unused memory and compute resources), Storage Management (to reclaim tier 1 disk space), and VM Retirement/Archival (to reclaim unused compute and storage resources).

Breakout: Drying Out After Hurricane Sandy: Leveraging vCloud Director and Other Cloud Enablement Tools for Simpler, Faster DR Operations
Thursday, August 29th, 10:30 am – 11:30am;
Presenters: David Ngo, Phil Curran
Session ID:

Why go: A big lesson learned from Hurricane Sandy is that DR readiness is not a one-time thing, but a daily struggle to ensure both recovery readiness as well as compliance. The proliferation of virtual infrastructures gives you many more tools to be DR ready and this session will discuss the emerging technologies that are the foundation of a successful business continuity plan. Making the short list are: WAN-optimized copy technologies like deduplication-aware replication, VM encapsulation that leverages P2V and V2V conversion, and orchestration and automation capabilities that can understand the dynamics of both virtual and cloud-based models for DR.

At our booth, get ready to do some serious geek-boxing with our Commvault’s data management gurus. They’re ready to walk you through 5 demos:

  • Using Commvault's vCloud Director integration for single-step restores
  • Leveraging VM Archival/Retirement to eliminate VM sprawl
  • Comparing Hardware Snapshots with VADP for Data Protection
  • On-the-fly P2V migration with Virtualize Me
  • Automating repetitive tasks with Commvault's new Workflow Engine

Customer and Partner Presentations

Don’t just take our word for it, listen to folks that have successfully modernized their virtualized infrastructure and increased the value of the information they manage using Simpana software. We’re honored to host end users and partners at our booth throughout the week including:

Monday - 8/26

Tuesday - 8/27

Wednesday - 8/28

Rackspace on Efficient Data Management

Family Search on Virtualization for DR Ops

Nimble Storage

California Department of Water Resources on Virtualization for Multi-tenant Environments

You’ll see our team at various community events and parties throughout the week. The highlights:

Sometimes things are simply meant to be. As you know, this year is the 10th anniversary of VMworld. This year Commvault introduced the 10th release of our Simpana software. As you’ve seen, the theme for VMworld is “Defy Convention.” We believe in the radical yet simple idea that you can do more with backup than just protect data. That a single software platform is much more scalable and efficient than a collection of loosely integrated and solutions that are costly in the long run. So clearly, we can get behind conventions that defy convention. And if that sounds like you, let’s meet up at the show.
